Last week, I was in Florida for a week of vacation with my wife. When we got there, the temperatures were unseasonably warm (90-92F), humid and a little windy. It had also rained quite a bit the previous week, so the Banana River, Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon were higher than normal and muddy. So the first part of the week, the fishing was pretty slow. However, by the end of the week, the temps cooled and the winds moderated which helped the water clear up. I caught a couple Redfish and Speckled Trout in the Banana River right behind the condo we were staying at and up in Mosquito Lagoon just north of the Space Shuttle Launch Pads adjacent to the Cape Canaveral National Seashore. On my first cast in the Mosquito Lagoon, I caught an ugly little Puffer Fish (pic included). I've also attached pictures of the Banana River by our Condo, several more of Mosquito Lagoon (note bald Eagle in one of the pics) and one from the beach, at the Cape Canaveral National Seashore which was across the road from where I was fishing in the Mosquito Laggoon. All in all, a fun trip.

My grandparents live on the indian river when they are there in the winter. Is there any fishing on that "river"?

Josh...There is some excellent fishing on the Indian River. If I were you, I'd definitely give it a try!

puffer fish are like rock sole (flounder) up here. an annoying bycatch you're always going to end up with

Josh,
The Indian River/Mosquito Lagoon area of Florida offers some of the finest sight casting opportunities to large redfish in Florida. You also have the opportunity to chase tarpon, sea trout and many other inshore species. It is a fantastic resource that I highly recommend you take advantage of while visiting your family. Google Indian River fly fishing and perhaps a guided trip would be a nice request for ol' St Nick this year.
Take care,
Chris

i fished the indian river a few times when i lived in florida, but never had a boat and for whatever reason couldn't find a whole lot of bank fishing. i never really did too well out there, but i know there's some good fishing to be had
