Hello,
I post early " Can you go wrong with Cabelas spey rod "

I did ended up buying very sweet Thomas & Thomas 12' for 8weight spey rod and love it!

Super light and powerfull.

I did test cast with new rio AFS Shooting Head line and it cast with ease!

I have question on running line, do I need any specific one? can I use 20/30 lsb Dacron backing line?
Also I have Multi tip system Super fast sink/fast sink etc.. only problem is they are 12' Long.

I used them on my single hand 8 weight rod.
I noticed that spey casting multi tips are in the 20-30' lenghts.

Can I use my shorter ones and still be good to go?
Thanks bunch for all your help.

On my first trip to Metolius river with my new T&T rod i was after Bull trout only to hook 4 Chinooks, did not target him , just happened they like my purple zonker.

Tight lines!
Les

You could use your backing for running line but I don't think you would be very pleased with the results.

There are lots of different running lines in an large range of price points from $9.95 to $44.95. Here are a few choices

AIRFLO RIDGELINE RUNNING LINE-$34.95
FLOATING SALMON ORANGE 30#
FLOATING YELLOW 20#
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIRFLO PRE-LOOPED RUNNING LINE-100'-$34.95
FLOATING-FL GREEN 30#
INTERMEDIATE FL YELLOW 25#
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIRFLO NON-STRETCH MIRACLE BRAID-$24.95
40yds-35# FL GREEN
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RIO POWERFLEX CORE SHOOTING LINES-$39.95
COLD WATER FLOATING-.024, .030, .035
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RIO SLICK SHOOTER-35LB or 50lb-115'-$9.95
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MONIC LEVEL RUNNING LINE-$44.95
100' SPOOL-LIGHT ORANGE .024 or LIGHT YELLOW .030
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROG HAIR RUNNING LINE-$12.95
40#=.019, 50#=.022, 58#=.024, 88#=.030
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SA FRESHWATER RUNNING LINES-100'-$32.95
FLOATING SPEY MONOCORE .034=30#-SURF
FLOATING .031=20#-ORANGE
FLOATING .038=30#-MIST GREEN

Your 12' sinktips will work just fine on your AFS head but I would cut the head back from the tip the length of your sinktips and loop it and the back of the floating section you cut off.

I've been using the Rio Slick shooter with the AFS head- it's definitely a nice shooting line. The AFS that I've been throwing is strictly a floating line - not sure if slick shooter would be the best running line for picking up deep/heavy tips because as the name implies, it's slick. It will kink occasionally if you don't practice proper line management on the shoot, but overall, love the combination.

I think if one is looking to throw tips, the skagit system is better suited, and in that case, I purchased the Rio Skagit head with the integrated running line....that's my .02.

From my point of view, the best is the Monic.
