Nice fish. Nice rod. That handle looks great. With all due respect, thats exactly the kind of post that I would like to see less of. I WHOLE HEARTLEDLY agree that is a handsome rod, with a great handle, however I wish more people were interested in posting about the fishing aspect of theese very functional rods. Yes they are cool, and yes they can be very nice loking and fun to watch, but the further i dig into the spey game, the more i see people concentrated on the casting and or rods. I would sure like to hear of more FISH caught in stuations single hand guys were getting skunked. Again, I mean no disrespect, and I agree with your post, however I think the spey realm should be more about catching fish, and less about casting and or equipment.

AND by the way, SWEET fish!

Ummmm.......... gee I seem to remember using mine recently......... where could it have been. Oh yeah I remember now! It was on the Methow last weekend, froze my ass of in the morning and didn't catch squat. ;):clown:

Oh and the artistry is very much part of what makes spey such a unique component of fly fishing. I will add....... that is one of the most exquisite examples of craftsmanship I have see in a long time. Nice fish, nice rod.

Sorry man I haven't seen any flies but my own but I'll check the back of my truck tomorrow morning. If you want to catch chum's I'll let you in on the anti-secret that is the mouth of the Wallace.

One other thing, check out AATF's All about the Spey at the Ben Howard boat launch, they will give you enough information about your rod and your technique to improve you fishing experience 10 fold.... if you ask the right questions

Thanks guys. Gotta love this time of year. Have to give credit where credit is due though, although I do build some of my own rods this rod was built by Steve Godshall. And Jc dont fret this rod casts and fishes as great as it looks! Good luck fishing tomorrow, if I werent two states away I wouldnt mind taking you up on that fishing offer and letting you try the rod out for yourself, go get em. Kevin

Beautiful rod. How do you like the wooden handle? I'm not a huge fan of cork but haven't found anything suitable to replace it.

I've been out last few weeks with my new spey rod. Hit the upper Klamath and got a few small fish on it, and I landed one silver and small chinook in the last month on local rivers. I still feel like I'm going for my single-hander when I really want to catch fish, though :) It's all about confidence, and I'm not there yet with the spey.

Yup,

Lets see ... I donated my sage 6126 to the Wenatchee River on October 25th ... but a friend came along and saved the day and I speyed with his 10foot 8 wt single hand rod. Then my parther broght my LOOP Multi 8 wt which was a little much for that river but fished it well and blanked on Saturday the 26th . Bummer.

So I went back and fished it yesterday - Nov 3rd - taking 2 hours out to search the river bottom for my rod - and blanked again although my partner got one. The River was MUCH lower and lookedbeautiful ... water temp 39 in the am and warmed to 41 pm . Had to replace my Sage/reel/line and still have yet to get a tug on it ... Headed to the JD next weekend. Hopefully I'll break it in then.

Retirement is grossly under-rated ....:thumb:

Three/four afternoons per week. Will be out today, and as I have no soccer games tomorrow (state playoffs) I'll take a 'vacation.'

jcalderon,

Not sure where or what you are seeing...but the OVERWHELMING majority of steelheaders are FISHING with a two hander. Not sure how well you can fish one without casting it tho ;) ...maybe that is why you are seeing those practicing. Some people might even enjoy just casting them. And not fish.

I personally found them to be a highly efficient casting AND fishing device in '93. I didn't even make it through one full steelhead season before making the switch. And have been having a blast learning to cast and fish them ever since. Single hand rods are bland and too limiting (For me anyway). Some like working around those challenges. Some don't.

Dig deeper because the 'casting only' segment is but a small fraction of the two hand users.

Hey JC. First off Im not trying to start anything here or start a big pi------ match the likes of which are going on in other areas of this forum. But you seem to keep speaking negatively about people out practicing spey casting or "throwing yarn" or people talking about spey casting and/or lines. As with any sport or hobby practice does make perfect. Especially with spey casting/fishing. Now I try to fish as much as I can, but dont always have the opportunity because of where I live and fishing seasons in my local area. But Im out there every chance I get "throwing yarn". When I practice I concentrate on my casts and what I can do to improve my casting. When I fish I concentrate on presentation and FISHING! Fishing time is valuable time and I dont want to waste an hour of fishing time trying to figure out what the heck is going wrong with my double spey or single spey. Just because I cant fish I dont put the rod in the closet and say well I cant fish so whats the point in going out and casting. I doubt Peyton Manning or Tom Brady kick back on the couch all week saying "well the game isnt til sunday so no need to go throw a football around" And people talking about lines and casting and such, its how information gets passed around. People share which lines work on rods and help each other out with problems they cant figure out themselves. If you have an opportunity to go throw some yarn with people every week, Im jealous. I would be all over it. Not only will you learn alot and get to try some gear out that may be just what your looking for but you may also meet some pretty cool people. And the knowledge and yes PRACTICE you get will pay off big time when you do go out and fish. Again Im not trying to start up anything with you but I think you should rethink your ideas of people throwing yarn and talking about lines and such, gaining knowledge of all areas of the sport and putting that knowledge to practice and use is what makes the whole fishing experience better and more productive when you have the opportunity to fish. Kev...... I understand where you are coming from... I guess i kind of opened can of worms..... I just mentioned it because the last few weeks I have spent a lot of time on the rivers and it seemed like every time i saw someone with a two hander they were ot fishing...... However, I id get skumked each and every trip, so perhaps the casting guys were doin the right thing.... I just tried to make my casting lessons "trial by fire"......

Kevin Giusti

Hey JC I dont think you opened a can of worms at all. Ive done the trial by fire aproach also but quickly learned that time spent practicing things in a non fishing setting made my time on the water much more productive. Instead of trying to analyze each and every cast AND try to control what the fly was doing AND analyze what I would try on the next cast, time fishing was about presenting that fly and casting adjustments were made much quicker and easier because of time spent practicing. Again Im not trying to get on you man, I just want to see you get the most out of your fishing time!! Take advantage of the get togethers, a couple of hours of practice and help from others will make your time spent fishing much more enjoyable and productive! Kevin

I've mostly been fishing my singlehander the last month or so, because I've been on fairly small water, and there hasn't been much rain. I've been fishing leech type patterns on sinking poly leaders and just spey cating with a 10' 7wt. I did make it to an Upper C. trib for a few days and excercised my spey rod, although I only own one and it was a bit overkill.

Got my first Spry a month ago. I love the casting aspect of it and trying to dial it in. I have spent a a bit of time on the Wenatchee, Puyallup, Green, Sky, and a touch of salt water. I am still waiting for a pull on the other end. It has been great fun though!!
