I'm posting this up here because a friend is thinking of getting this rod (used) for an all around salmon/steelhead rod. What are you thoughts? He is also looking for some advice as what line to use with this ?? Skagit? Tip sys? What grain? According to him the rod is a 14' 9/10wt 4 pc. (apparently the Loomis numbers are not the same as most manufactures, in that they don't coincide with the dimensions/pieces of the rod). Again, I haven't verified this but this is what I'm being told.
So any help is appreciated?
Also if you have a spare rod/line/reel you'd like to sell (local only) please pm me.
Thanks.

Buck,

I'm not familiar at all with that rod. My opinion is that 9 and 10 wt rods are too heavy and uncomfortable to be an all around salmon and steelhead rod. It might make an excellent chinook salmon rod however. I think a 7/8 or 8 wt makes a lot better all around Spey rod for steelhead and salmon like coho.

I have to agree. Too Heavy. I have an 8140 and can't imagine going any bigger, in fact i'd like to move down a size. It was for sale for 225 used. So I think the price point is what is getting him. That ans it's a loomis, which I have heard good things about there single handers, but not much word about the doubles. What if you get this message, would you recommend?

The new Echo classic 7/8 weight is a terrific rod for about the same money only new. I had an early loomis 14' gl3 spey rod, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, at least now days with all the good inexpensive spey rods available from echo, tfo and others.

Double check the warranty, I think it is only for the original owner. It would be better for him to spend $100 more and get the right rod with a warranty. Loomis makes a great rod but there are some better options out there. I have a bunch of 9 or bigger rods that have not seen the light of day for many years. Your friend would be much happier with a 8 for all around duties.

If he does go with the 9 over load it with a Skagit system. He won't have to work as hard to load the rod.
