Taking a break from the more difficult flies to tie up some chronomids. I have a lot of materials in various colors.
Are there any particular combinations that definitely DON't work?
I'm talking yellow, white, green, black, chartreuse, gold, silver in various materials.

One may catch a fish on practically anything, but there is little point in filling one´s boxes with loads and loads of variations, as one invariably does not know which the fish might be taking. Better to have some reliable standards.

A search on "buzzers" will also turn up a very large number of UK sites and patterns.

Agree with that. One normally caries a few in those colours in sizes from 16 - 8 over here in the UK in order that one matches closely or fishes the next size up having observed the insect activity on the day.
