Ran across this video. Some may have their differences with John Hazel, but how he defines "good" steelhead fishing, is classic! "The water seduces you"!

Geez Panhandle. Are comments like that really necesarry? The video looks like it is going to be great and Johns comments are also great. I hope people enjoy this post for what it has to offer and dont turn it into a personal attack on people who are associated with the video as seems to be starting with the first reply right away. If you have issues with someone take it up with them personally. Kevin

god, there is some gorgeous footage in that video, the editing/quality is outstanding. Looked like they were out spey fishing in the spring on the D (it's hardly ever that green), wonder what they were catching, especially since steelhead dont start showing in their neck of the woods until about august usually. I usually find fishing videos pretty monotonous, but the preview was sweet.

I went into John and Amy's shop when i was 13 to buy a few flies. I asked about beadheads and they said that they don't fish those. They wouldn't give me fly advice. Then Amy badmouthed the guide my dad had booked for me who IMO is still one of the best guides the D has ever seen. Its weird to me why they would do that to a kid but they havn't had buisness from me since. Damn good thing Jeff Cotrell is at Fly Shop of the Dalles, what a good guy!

The part that's interesting is I've never met either of the people, but do know several that know them well. Apparently it's a 'love-hate' relationship with 'every one else' on the Deschutes. The term 'guides water only' appears in almost every converstation ....

I have not had bad experiences with them, however I have heard the same thing from friends. Oh well, the video looks great and I do own one of their other videos.

While I know how annoying it can be when the elders try to "learn you", they probably were just trying to point you in the right direction in their minds. They didn't realize that you fully comprehend many aspects of flyfishing including the wet fly swing and that your choice of nymphs wasn't neieve, it was by choice.
The video looks cool. Only problem is that the cmaera didn't pick up the hoards of boats and other anglers that are always there with the steelhead :p

"guides water only" is a term I've never heard before. Are people saying John tries to run people out of certain runs? I don't get what is being implied.

Sorry guys, my opinion comes from growing up fishing that river and my association with them. I litterally caught them (or i should say one of them) spying on me in the bushes in a run about 8 yrs ago. That's about as far as I'll go here.

"East Fork" I'll follow Panhandle's lead here.:hmmm: I have no problem with folks trying to make a 'living,' even a very good 'living,' but might there be a limit as to how far you're willing to take that?
If this were Southern KalEfornia, the answer would be no?

Amy has recieved several warnings from the fish and game about harrassing other guides and fisherman. She has been known to try to bump people out of "her water". As a transplant to the area I can't understand why she would do this, not that anyone should have the right.

Roger that ZP. Interesting part is that via a boat you have 'unlimited access' to water that a 'bankie' could only dream about. But ..... what's to add?
Forgot to add: John, your new puppies ... how old? Cute as can be even in a small photo.

Yep, these were the stories I've heard. The story goes, that she is a "female" guide, and can getaway from "bumping" people around. I guess she takes advantage of her feminin side on the river. Other guides and fisherman can't get upset and threaten or beat a woman, so she continues to do it. I wasn't sure there was any truth to it or not.

The owner of the fly shop at Sandy is definitely not a big bunny rabbit. He is what nightmares are made of. His own son sugar coatted it and called him a carmudgeon.

Your are correct sir!! His son, owner of FlyH20 still calls him a "old carmudgeon" and many think of him as much worse. After reading the court report about the Hazels it saddens me they are still in business.
On the North Umpqua they had a sit in of over 100 people against a guide who did similiar tactics, maybe the same is warranted against the Hazels?

Possibly, I just feel they are doing no respect or service to the river. Furthermore all of the other guides I have seen treat the river and its fisherman with pure class. I love that river even if she doesn't give her steelhead up easily (atleast to me).

I'm confused. The Fly Shop in Welches is owned by Mark Bachmann. His son is Troy Bachmann, the owner of flyh2o. What do they have to do with the Hazel's, who are located in Maupin? I don't even think Jon and Amy have kids.

About the only thing I'm aware of that would tie Mark to the Hazels is he guides (and or guides that work for him) a lot on the Deschutes. I'm sure (the collective) 'they' cross paths on a regular basis.
Now that I'd pay to watch ....;)
