View Full Version : Spey Tackle - Internet Only For Me

My local fly shop no longer carries spey tackle, no demand the owner has advised me, and another major fly shop in Chicago area says they sold maybe three spey rods all year. A dwindling demand out here in western Gls. I cannot blame them.
So now my only resource for spey lines, rods, reels is the internet.
Right now its lines I am interested in.
I wonder if any one provides loaner spey lines to try if you are not in the market for a new rod also ?
The great spey line search begins again.

Yep, my last new spey rod was from Mike @ Red Shed, looking for new lines this winter which is the most complex of all spey things to purchase IMHO

The other would be flyfishusa (sponsor of the Sandy River Spey 'Clave). You want it, they've got it (or will get the odd-ball stuff ASAP).

Yes Flyfishusa is another good internet one I have used before, great service and lots of spey products to choose from. Have not ordered from them in over a year time to take another look.
How is Kaufmans these days for spey product ? San Jose fly shop also has been a past internet source I have used.
Will be spending some internet time over the holiday searching away.

My personal experiences with that flyfishUSA over the past 5 years have all been more than satisfactory. They are on my short list of suppliers of all things Spey.

Hal, if 'spey is the name of the game' I'd call the Bellevue, Washington shop. They'd be far more in tune with this type of gear. Ask for 'Sparky.':thumb:

If you want to PM me I would be glad to give them to you. I am weary of posting them publicly after the fall out from the guide that keeps native steelhead.
It wasn't an absolute horrible experience and I didn't get @#$%ed over royally,,I wanted to work with that shop because their size and stock makes people recommend them when dealing with spey gear. But there were a couple different incidences that were bad business to say the least. I contacted a company of an item I was looking at and related one of the problems I was having and they said that this was not the first problem they had with that shop. So I wasn't alone.
I should say if you want to order something straight off their website its a cut and dry transaction I am certain you will have no problems. And it is an impressive online catalog. I was dealing with slightly more complicated things than just a point and click purchase, but only slightly. Additionally, I did not deal with all of the staff their and they have 4 or 5 regular people. So..... for what its worth.
Regardless of Flyfishusa, 2 of my 3 favorite all time shops are All About the FLy and Red Shed. Both of them sell spey gear via mail/internet. Both of them will work with you to get you what you need. So no need to sweat.

Hal my friend, I'm pretty sure you already know that I have a test drive plan for a lot of different lines for two handers. I can think of at least two more well known PNW fly shops that also offer this service.
Your PC keyboard is a hell of a lot closer to you then the local fly shop you've been lamenting in regards to spey tackle for the last few years. From reading your posts for several years it is/was apparent that the Chitown fly shop owner you often speak of never cared whether he had your business or not if you wanted spey tackle.

then why would you look anywhere else? for a better/cheaper deal?
Poppy is da Man, pure and simple. he makes things happen when other's can't. save your wrists, call Poppy, done deal.
