Sorry for dredging this up from the past...
I seined in Ak in the early 70s. Some years the "Jelly's" are worse than others and the redder, the hotter. On a Purse Seiner, you're using a 1/4 mile long net that can develop "bags" (the net sags or eases in places as the season wears on). Three guys are on the net staking corks, net, and lead line as it falls from the power block (on the boom end) when you're bringing it in. On a bad year the jellys collect in the bags and you really have to pull hard to get them through the block. Once, we were pulling so hard, climbing the net for added weight, I looked up at the wrong time and caught a big crimson jelly in the face with both eyes open. Let me tell you about pain! I wanted to die. Flushed my eyes for 2 hours. There are no doctors in Icy Strait.
