I'm looking for different methods/gadgets you all use to secure your assembled rods to a pontoon. I know i can buy rod holders at the store to attach to the boat, but at about $30/piece, i don't feel like shelling out the dough to accommodate for 3-4 rods.

lookin to see if there are alternate methods, crafty little projects, or whatever the lot of you have done to keep them from falling in the drink on a river float.

Could do something like that.

I use the same as Jason's picture. PVC is heavy wall, longer than the 9140-4 in broke in half, some of the pipe is not cut in half but left solid. Lined with old tired leaky neopreen cut up waders. PVC is a few inches shorter than the 8' pontoon and a few longer than the rod. Craig

Try PVC tubes mounted vertically to the back of the seat. I saw a pic of that here in the gallery but don't remember where.

I use some velcro straps run under the frame and placed just as the PVC holders above. One of my toons has velcro straps built into the gear bag just for that purpose.

Attach 3 - 4 rods? That is quite a few. I have a piece of pvc lashed vertically to a pontoon with a slot cut in the top of it for the reel to slide into. The natural spring force of the pvc holds the rod tight. It holds my second rod fully rigged and ready to go. This setup lets me switch from floating to sinking lines by switching rods.

I carry three extra rods on my two man pontoon. I'm too lazy to retype my system, but it's in this old thread.

iagree I stopped carrying 2 or more rods because I spent more time switching from rod to rod or futzing with various setups than I did fishing.

That said, my own 'toon is set up with two Scottys: one on the front right that holds the primary rod when I need to go to the oars; and a second on the left rear that holds a secondary rod pointed backwards and low to keep it out of the way.

Tough on backcasts . . .

I'd ideally like to find a way to get 3 rods on there without interfering with my back cast, or creating places for my line to get tangled. I'll most likely only be taking 2 along with me most of the time; single hander and a spey. Problem is, I'm extremely uncreative when it comes to being crafty, and 9 times out of 10 my ideas end up failing miserably for whatever it is I'm trying to accomplish. Granted, rod holders aren't exactly rocket science, haha.

Since my boat has a steel frame, I use the magnet rod holders marketed to keep your rod in place next to your car

I use these against the frame uprights that support the oars. I put some clear packing tape on the frame to protect the paint, and I also made a rod leash out of some velcro. It works good for me.
