it has been 15 years since i have fished the "res". back in those days a guy could expect world class rainbows and browns in respectable numbers if the wind wasn't blowing you off the lake. i havn't been for years and knowone i talk to now has been there in years either.

We have fished the reservation pretty regularly over the past 7 or 8 years. The fishery is hugely dependent on tribal stocking programs which can be very haphazard. There is also a significant amount of harvest ice fishing. Four or five years ago we were still getting the odd 8 to 10+ pound fish out of Duck and some decent fish to about 6 out of Goose. Mitten had good numbers of 3 to 4 pound fish. We didn't fish it this past season but the June before we spent 3 days on Duck and Goose and had moderate fishing at best in terms of size. Lots of numbers but most under 20 inches. I think the best fish might have weighed 4 or 4 1/2. I did hear rumors of one lake which was kicking out good fish this year but the guy wouldn't tell me which unless I went with him. Didn't have the time so don't know which one it might have been. Lots of guys try to go just on ice off where numbers of bigger fish will be right on the beach looking for spawning gravel. Many of the pictures you see will be of black fish. Not my deal but each to their own. Fished a lake called Hope a few years ago - I am sure it was named that because you had to hope the wind didn't blow!

For better advise you might want to call a shop in Kalispel and see if anyone has good info. Don't remember the name of the shop but you should be able to find something on the web. Good Luck W

It's all good. 4 horns is the go to lake as well as mission. Not near as many of the big 10 pounders any more but there are a lot of nice fish still. Google earth and find some lakes that don't have names and start hiking. You might be pleasently awarded. :thumb:

Have done well at Mission the past three years. But as others mentioned the wind can make difficult fishing. Try Arend's Fly SHop in Columbia for up to date info. I know the owner guides on many of the Rez's lakes.

If you had a week and were going to flyfish lakes would you choose the Blackfoot Res or go South to Henrys, Hebgen, Wade, ect? I need to start planning next summers trip.

as a response as to whether to plan to go to the blackfeet res, henry,s lake, wade, or the other big fish lakes of that area one would need to know the timing of your trip, the type of water you like to fish, and even though wind can be a facter no matter where you plan to go, the blackfeet res is notorios for high wind that can blow steady for days. an old friend from years ago parked his old ford van on a hill overlooking fourhorns lake and a gust of wing sheared the hinge pin of the passenger door. that made for an interesting 10 hour ride home. and what do tell the little woman at home.

Kevin. Get some 20lb P-Line and a 9 wt with a huge nasty shooting head and keep checking the montana FWP website for the day they drop the rainbow fingerlings! Olive and white double bunny or anything that looks like a small trout. I'll let you know if I get an exact date ahead of time. :beer2:
