I am new to the art of spey fishing and bought my 1st TFO "Deer Creek" rod, WOW,,,so much to learn especially about the line... My Question Is; What line works best out of this particular rod. The more I research the more confused I get. So far, the Rio Windcutter seems to be the one , but I'm hearing that the 8,9, 10, works best, but I don't want to over load it ... any thoughts..

Yup...pm Poppy at the Red Shed and he'll give you the goods. You might want to start w/ a Skagit line, particularly if you intend to be fishing tips. Spey pages is another web site that is devoted to two handers and always a good source of information. Good luck.

I just bought that same rod I've been using a 550 skagit with a 5' cheater and 6-10 foot T8 and T14 tips. Or the 9wt skagit floating tip (15') with no cheater.

That rod will work with a wide range of grain weights so you can use quite a few lines. But for me I find that after several years of struggling with mid belly deltas and Windcutters that I really prefer the skagit.

Talk to Ron at All About the Fly or Poppy and they'll help you out. A search on the site for that rod will probably list out options, since many questions have been asked on the Deer Creek rods for line recommendations.

I really like that rod and have cast it at the AATF Sunday casting event many times, I just can't remember which lines work best.

Have fun with it! I think that the 13' is one of the best of the line, although I really like them all! You're going to love it!

I would suggest you go to the speypages.com and search "deer creek" and then read the recommendations of Mike Kinney who designed the rod.

Since it appears that you are in Ohio and won't have the chance to get down to the Skykomish to do a bunch of testing I would suggest going with the 7/8 Airflo Delta Multi tip. As an all around line this is my favorite and you can learn all of your air born and water born anchor casts and get used to casting sink tips before moving on to longer bellied lines like the CND or a super compact Skagit setup.

Since Mike is the master and I am very much just the learner, every line he mentioned in his post will work well.

I have the 7/8 Deer Creek and I will be getting the 13' 6" 8/9 because it matches really well with my 8/9 delta multi tip. Oh well I'm rambling........ my 2 cents get the Airflo Delta.. blah, blah.

Go with Mikes advice. I cast that rod during a lesson with him and the delta was a good match. I like the Airflo Skagit lines quite a bit, you might ask him which of those would be a good match.

At 13 foot you're right on the cutting edge (imho) of a Scandi line. Candidly, Skagit heads are my cup of tea, now give me a good scandi match and all is right with the world.

Fred,

Did you mean to say skagit heads are NOT my cup of tea?

I appreciate your posts on the spey rods. I am pretty new to the whole game and will line a Loop Green 12' 8 wt. at some point (when I feel I can get away with it and not have a divorce filed against me) and am interested in a Skagit set up or a Scandi setup so when I read posts on the differences I pay attention. I will almost certainly try before I buy for this purchase. I would ask why you prefer scandi to skagit but I am already too close to being a thread hijacker.;)

I am gonna have to give the Airflow delta multi tip the nod. I've got the Delta and it is a helluva line.

On the Deer Creek 13'-7/8.... how's this sound, for the setup on the line
for the big stuff & to get down deep- 550 Skagit & cut T14 in 8', 10' & 12'..........Then for a floating setup.... use a Vision shooting head with a 10'-15' floating polyleader.... Any other suggestions would be appreciated

i dont know anything about the vision line, but i threw the skagit floating tip on my skagit line and loved it, just something you might look into to save a couple of bucks.

The TFO 7/8 is a very forgiving rod and most any quality floating short to medium head spey line should cast pretty well to very well on it.

I have the CND GPS and even though it took a little while to get used to the casting stoke the line requires I am now dreaming of riffle hitching away on the South Fork of the Sky.

I read someone on speypages say "put a CND GPS line on a rod that someone has just been casting with a windcutter and it will make the rod seem like a rod costing twice the cost". I forgot who said that. Anyone remember?
