I was floating the Sky yesterday and I wished I could use my 12lbs steel cylinder w/spikes effectively. With envy I could see the drift boats anchoring and when I dropped mine down, it bobbed on the botton ineffectively. Do I need a heavier anchor? a longer rope? This is a 11' Scadden.

Sounds to me like you need a little of both, a longer chain and longer rope as the angle sounds too steep if its not grabbing.
I have never anchored in moving water with a Pontoon, as I understand it, it is a very dangerous operation. The back end can get taken down like a planer with a strong current of rogue wave along with you too. So I can only offer advise for a hard bottom boat.
Wear a life jacket if are anchoring in a pontoon......I wouldn't anchor using a pontoon......easier to dump in on shore and swing the fly through in my opinion

Somuch,
I don't have a pontoon, but I use a very small raft (Watermaster sized) and a canoe on rivers. I anchor with an old 5 pound window weight. I don't even want to try to anchor anywhere that won't hold me.
I think 12# is plenty for your 11' Scadden. That and 20-25' of anchor line out should hold you anywhere it's safe to anchor that boat in a river. Hell, I only use a 25# pyramid anchor for my 16' sled.

When I had my 10' pontoon I used an 18# anchor. Out of the main currents it would hold the boat fine.
I have not had much luck anchoring with either of my 'toons. I have decided the my 'toons are better used for bar hoppers than anchoring boats... which led me to my drift boat:beer2:

'bout the only thing an anchor is good for on a pontoon is to keep it from drifting away while you are fishing the run. I use a 4# pyramid on my 9ft 'toon, more'n enough to keep it where I put it. I would never consider trying to anchor while actually drifting, cause I don't like swimmin' in waders that much.
