My friend, Scotty Howell, died today at 2PM after a prolanged battle with an aggressive throat cancer. Scotty posted on this forum under the user name 'Hywel', reflective of his Welsh heritage.

Fly tying is a craft that on occasion elevates itself to art. Scotty was a craftsman, but, more than that, he was an artist. His flies were immaculately tied, and rooted in the traditions of salmon and steelhead tying. His use of materials and colors, however, was truly artistic. He had a very individual style, and his flies are instantly recognizable.

I had one final chance to visit Scotty yesterday and urge him on his way.

Adios, hermano.

Sorry to hear about his passing. I'm glad you were able to see him before he died. I hope to have friends willing to drop by when I am on my way out. I think it would mean a lot.

Stu, all
Yes , Scotty was one of a kind. We traded flies as well as some materials. I spoke to him not long ago about his cancer and he has been in our prayers for a long time. He will be missed by all, a great person and tyer. I was sad when I saw your report.

Stu,

I got to trade flies with Scotty through some of your swaps. What a brilliant fly dresser he was. He and his talent will be sorely missed.

I can't unfortunately call him a close friend, but we shared a running joke based on one of his ties. Every time we saw each other we'd half shout "Mike Wizowski!" based on his "Monster's Inc" inspired marabou tie. He never got tired of it. Neither did I.

Scotty was a humble man, almost to a fault. When he finally got hooked up (no pun intended) with the Daiichi Pro Staff he asked if I'd write the little bio about him for their website, which can be found here: http://anglersportgroup.com/daiichi_pros_details.asp?id=72.

To this day he will always occupy a special place in my memories because noone I have ever met could tie so well for having been doing it for such as short amount of time as he had been tying when that bio was written.

Man, he's going to be missed and to those of you who were closer to him than I, my most sincere condolences for your loss.

I was really Sorry to hear Scotty passed away, we where good pals via email for quite a few years
over the years we had so much in common, Flies, fishing, Football, bikes, music. It was strange but great, I always enjoyed getting his emails seeing his new flies and enjoying his criac/humour. The way he would type grin at the end of an email always made me smile

Scotty, was a great tyer and a great guy.

I sent him a letter about Christmas time not sure if he got it before he passed away.

I miss his wit, and his flies .

There will be a column remembering Scotty and his flies in the Autumn 2008 issue of Northwest Fly Fishing.

Thanks to John Shewey and Steve Probosco for the opportunity to remember our friend in print. Scotty will be thrilled.
