epoxy head dryer, little help

Trying to build an epoxy head drying/rotator I remember a post a while back but I couldn't find it of some that people have made. Went to radio shack today but couldn't get a low enough rpm motor.

So let's see it! How can I make this happen :beer2:

I've used a cheap barbeque rotisserie motor in the past, and it worked well.

Rick, I'm going to be the naysayer; don't do it (make your own) unless you have a lot of time.

I had a low rpm motor, and took multiple trips to Lowe's, Home Depot, NAPA, etc., to try and figure out how to come up with a bracket, switch, fly mounting wheel, etc. It was a pain, and took lots of hours. :mad: I came up with something that worked, but it was never as good as the models in the store. (think about it; you're already having trouble tracking down a motor; it doesn't get better). :beathead:

I ended up popping for the extra few $$ to get a commercially available model, and couldn't be happier. Think about it; those folks have already done all the wrong things and come up with all these prototypes to get to the model they're selling. :thumb:

So, think about what time and gas is worth to come up with something that isn't as good as what is being offered in the store. You may have some connections to get you a retail model at a favorable price.

I suspect you'd rather be fishing than building a fly turner. ;)

Thanks for the heads up richard but I called around and got everything I needed for $20 and it looks nice and works. Took me a total of 1 hour and 20 minutes including getting the parts and assembly. Used a disco ball motor that turns 7-9 rpm. used left over mohagany from a drift boat I built for the frame. drilled and threaded the piston of the discoball motor and can accomadate up to 2" foam circles that i got at michals and are easy to replace with a wing nut and washer tension control :thumb:

Looks great and the discoball motor was a good call.

Richard you could say the same thing about tying flies and building rods. Sometimes it's not a money thing at all. Some like to build and some like to pay to have it built.

Nice job, man!

Cut some shallow 'slits' the depth of the disc, so you can slide the hooks in and out, instead of poking the fly in to the foam. Kind of a C&F fly box concept of holding flies/hooks . . .

I just made a nice turner out of a microwave turntable motor - as the microwave was a "curbside salvage" = $0.00

I made one out of a toner motor from a old copier. 12 years later and still going strong.
I do agree with Richard that the commercially made ones are very nice.
