I think that a kayak would probably be the most realistic all-around fly flishing vessel for me. I concentrate the most on saltwater beach fishing, but I'd like to do more rivers and lakes. I would like to hear any advice or info that experienced kayak fishermen are willing to share with regards to shopping for a first fishing kayak. Styles, sizes, accessories, prices, etc. Thank you to anyone who is in the know and willing to share.

A couple questions.

Have you kayaked before? On a SOT? Which one(s)? Any impressions?

What size are you? Height and weight.

The best piece of advise I can give you is to try as many as you can. Different kayaks "fit" different people differently.

Have you considered a canoe? I've been fishing - mostly flyfishing - out of one since 1975. I really enjoy using a canoe. You've got to be careful to pick the right boat, though. With thought and research, you can find a good canoe for fishing that has great initial stability and good secondary stability. Most modern boats (e.g. the ones made by Wenonah) are great boats for speed (in a canoe???) but not so good for fishing - not even the Wenonah fisherman canoe. My favorite flatwater canoe is the Quetco 17 by Souris River Canoes. A great link with lots of canoe info: http://www.redrockstore.com/

I have a 1976 Sea Nymph 15C aluminum boat and love it. I've fished it in rivers, lakes, ponds, coastal bays (staying well away fro the mouth), Puget Sound, Hood Canal, the Columbia and Willamette rivers. The list goes on. By the way in the 30 years I've been canoeing, I've never dumped one in anything less than class III water and never on flatwater (unless I did it on purpose).

I have a SOT Ocean Kayak 13' holds 450-500#. I'm 6'1', 250# no problems, but expect to get wet. It fish's great, I'm nearing retirement and I plan on rigging mine up a little more, small elec motor, fishfinder, etc. I just love it! My wife also has a Kayak, we focus on Saltwater trips, almost every weekend, weather permiting. Such as, Gig Harbor, the narrows, Hood Canal, etc. I want to do some river esturary fishing for Fall Chinook in it sometime. Any questions just drop me a PM. :beer2: Later, Dale
