Anyone heard about a pattern called at Raghead or Woolhead Sculpin for Steelhead? Ran into a fellow out on the river today that swears by them and boy they sure looked nice. From what I could tell it had a bunny tail, bunny blend with SLF body in various colors and clipped wool head. Just curious if anyone else has had any luck with these types of flies.

Here ya go. Never tried it yet, but have had it in mind for months now to tie one up. Going to have to now.

Used these for trout and they work pretty good. Use Rams wool for the head and put it in a dubbing loop, spin it, and wrap it on. Then just trim as you see fit. Works pretty good, plus if your cheap like me you can reuse the trimmings as it is still pretty long.

i would check out michael benett's exaspirator sculpin. Killer looking bug, and i can attest to it's fish catching ability.

They don't work, it's not even worth tying.

Wow, Thanks Hal. Those are nice. That gives me some great ideas for playing with this project. :thumb:

One of the best sculpin patterns for steelhead is, in my opinion, the little-known Lemire Sculpin which appears in Trey Combs' second book (the tome) on steelhead.
It is darker than most sculpin dressings, a phenomanon that occurs in upper river sculpins. Harry has taken a lot of winter steelhead on his sculpin....and I've taken a few myself. You may want to give it a try considering that it is a pattern from the Master.
Cheers,
