I just picked up the DVD "Steelhead Flies- Tying the Classics" by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard. I've never bought a tying DVD before, so didn't know what to expect. It's great! The instruction is all about tying different styles of steelhead flies, from simple marabous to speys and dees. Dec and Marty mix tradition, material preparation, and tying techniques in an easy conversational style. The instructions are clear, step-by-step, and easy to follow. I bought it for the spey and dee instruction, but learned a lot from the techniques they used with all styles of flies. If you're interested in learning to tie any style of steelhead fly, you need to consider picking this DVD up.

I won't take anything away from Big Tuna's review, but I finally completed viewing all of this production by Marty and Dec and I must say that this a great video for both beginning and advanced tiers alike. The assortment of flies tied would equip any steelheader and the photography was superb. Great video and thanks Marty and Dec for passing along your favortie ties for both summer and winter steelhead.

I enjoyed learning a few new tips and tricks taught by both Dec and Marty. My favorite trick is the schlappen conversion.... from Schlappen to spey hackle.... Way cool seeing how those flies move breath and come alive with those feathers. You'll have to watch the video to see how it is done! Being able to see those flies come alive is just awesome. Great Video Marty and Dec! It's definitely one to have in your library!
