Well I decided to add a thread called tying instructions. I'll add some more recipies with instructions later. I'll add this one to start.

Intruder instructions from Jack Cook.

Anyone with a good pattern that they think someone might need in the future, feel free to add thiers as well. Try to make it as detailed as possible.

Are you looking for any specific pattern types? I've done two tying instructions, one for tying Spey/Dee flies and another for a specific Atlantic salmon pattern (the Gordon), which really applies to any Atlantic salmon pattern.

Here is my caddis pupa tied for the Davidson river in North Carolina. I tie it on a size 16-18 dry fly hook. This pattern works very well out here on various rivers with caddis in them. I usually drop it off a larger nymph in order to get it down. Even with a tungsten bead it doesn't sink very well and floats in the current.

Bead= 1/16th black tungsten bead
Hook= size 16-18 dry fly hook
Body= Antron yarn olive, olive micro tubing, opalescent tinsel size small.

Step one, I place the hook in the vise and put the bead on. Have you ever tried putting a 1/16th bead on a size 18 hook. This helps with that.

I tie in all the materials on the back of the hook.

Wrap the tinsel forward and tie it off.

Repeat this process for the tubing and the antron yarn.

I then make a collar out of the black thread and tie off. This pattern is a variant of a sparkle caddis pupa. I have found that the picky trout on these rivers do not like the puffy body of the sparkle caddis pupa. This pattern looks a lot more like the natural caddis that has been washed off its rock in the current. I fish it dead drifted through the riffles and swung up at the end. 95% of my strikes are on the dead drift.

Here are two step by step sets of instructions I wrote a while ago. Enjoy!

John,
I've found the same thing as you have here in the west, that olive caddis larve catch more fish with a smooth body rather than a fuzzy one. I lay down an underbody of krystal flash and then a simi-transparent layer of synthetic, larva lace, d-rib, or similiar. Same idea as you're using.

Here is a Step by Step for The Guaranteed I did a couple of years ago for a novice lady flytier/fisher here in B.C .Originally designed as a river pattern , it is also effective in stillwater .
