Someone posted about buying seal dubbing from Feathers MC a while back. I'm wondering if it's legal and whether you have had any customs issues having it shipped from Canada?

I believe the seal dubbing that FeathersMc sells is legal (documented as having been imported pre-ban). I cannot comment on customs issues regarding having seal dubbing shipped from Canada, but I do not believe it is legal to import. FeathersMc is located in Michigan, so customs is not an issue for shipment within the US.

I talked to John McClain(feathersmc) last week and he is a terrific person to know and to purchase from. I bought seal dubbing in all colors of the rainbow and have been very very pleased with how it looks when dubbed onto the body of a spey or Atlantic Salmon pattern. He retired from law enforcement, so he of all people know about the legalities with buying and purchasing seal fur. This was actually from a seal coat that was dyed and used for this purpose. I highly recommend purchasing materials from this person, since he has capes and feathers that are very hard to get. BTW my purchase had a few Kori Bustard quills that coated the deal.

Thanks. Another board member pm'd me the same information and I ordered some from Feathers MC. Looking forward to trying it on some speys.

Yeah, I know I bought some seal dubbing from the UK. Don't think it was Feathers MC. But I know it came through customs with "seal fur dubbing" on the international invoice and was cleared through customs.
It's some great stuff to tie with. I like it alot. Love the translucent color.

Try angoran goat. It is pretty close to seal and totally legal.

Feathers MC is an American company that sells some fairly exotic supplies for tying Atlantic salmon and Spey flies. The owner has a legal supply of seal. After watching the Dec Hogan/Marty Howard DVD, I specifically wanted seal for its tradition, as well as its translucence. I am very pleased w/ the dubbing I picked up from Feathers MC and will be buying more in the future. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.
