View Full Version : Freaking Glo Bugs
Im trying to find out what im doing wrong tryign to tie these glo bugs. My problem is they dont come out as a full packed circle, the underside of the hook is only about 20% covered. Compared to the commercial ones i bought theyre not as round, packed tight like a compressed ball or retain their shape when in the water. Ive followed many different tutorials for them. So frustrated.

Try using a little more yarn and/or pulling tighter.
Kevlar thread is a big help here until you really get the hang of it.
Good luck.

Kevlar thread is a good call. GSP is even better if you can find it. Also I feel like Mcfly Foam beats the crap out of any yarn.
Thanks for the responses, Well after about 30 ties, i got 1 nice perfect one. And i dont know how i did it hahaha. Well after searching the net ive come to the conclusion that McFlyFoam is stretchier and gives the perfect balls effortlessly. And that its harder for the Egg Yarn as its a different material. I did find this though ( http://www.flytyingforum.com/uploads/gallery3fb838aa61aa5.jpg ) , and if i understand how they got to step4 i will probably be ok using the yarn instead of buying the foam.

I SECOND THE MCFLY FOAM. I CANT MAKE THEM WORTH A DAMN EITHER, BUT I JUST TRIM THE CRAP OUT OF IT WITH SCISSORS UNTIL I GET THE SHAPE I WANT. ONE THING I LIKE ABOUT MCFLY IS THAT AS THE FLY GETS FISHED/WORN IT STILL HOLDS ITS SHAPE BUT YOU GET WISPY TRAILERS COMING OFF OF THE FLY.

As you wrap the yarn around the hook, the pressure will clump the yarn around the hook. Kevlar and GSP are good to help. As others said use more yarn trim and a lighter to finish it off.
Or you can just use beads...
