I just picked up Rowley's Fly Patterns for Stillwaters book. Great looking patterns in there. I've never come across Frost Bite in a fly shop . . .the stuff he uses as body material on a bunch of chironos. Is there something similar? Maybe split a piece of ultra floss? Very fine strand of krystal flash?

thanks

Crystal Flash. Its about the same stuff not woven into a yarn. Many "unweave " the Frostbite when they use it so you save a step.

I've always substituted Flashabou of the same color. Pain in the a$$ unwinding that frostbite.

iagree Rowley also packages the same product under his stillwater line of supplies...it's called midge braid or something and is the same thing as frost bite and just as much of a pain to unravel.

Thanks!

I've got piles of flashabou and crystal flash.

On another topic how 'bout that Glenn's Leech in the same book? It's been a killer for me the past few trips to the local lakes.

Tied some up 'cause they look like they'd work, but haven't fished 'em much yet. They end up behind my other favorites.

Why would you "unwind" the Frost bite? Cut off a short section, grab a few strands on each end and pull and it comes unbraided down to about as thin as fashabou but still partially braided - very easy. I'm pretty sure I've seen Phil Rowley demo it that way.

Personally, when I've tried this it didn't "unwind", but ended up tieing the middle in a knot. Since I had flashabou before I got some frostbite, I just went back to it.

I haven't done it in awhile. I'll pull some out tonight and see if it still works like I remember.

Ya, lemme know. I haven't been taught if there's any tricks or anything on this, so there may be a right way and a wrong way. :thumb:
