Hello all,
I am wondering if in this day of the internet there is a resource where you could type up a hook brand, size and type (i.e. 900BL tiemco) and have it give you a bunch of fly patterns that the hook could be used in.

For the normal dry fly hooks and wets, it is not that big of a deal, but I bought a number of specialty hooks and tied the particular pattern, and after having them sit in my drawer for a year or three, I do not know what they were even originally called for.

Does this even make sense?

Best,
Griswald

I have not found anything like that. I usually use one brand of hooks. I will look at the pattern, use a cross-reference chart, of get out the bound books, and use a hook with a shank length comparable to the bug I am trying to imitate.

The example you use if a 900Bl. It is the same weight, bend and wire as a 100BL, except it is black. I will use 900's on my BWO, and other dark bodied bugs. I just like the look of the darker hook with the dark body. For a PMD, I will use a 100, as the color of the hook is close to the body color of the bug. This is getting really picky though, but I like the looks of the finished bugs.

I have used recycled hooks that I have stripped from previously tied flies, that I had no idea of what model the hook was. I just matched them up the best I could, and tied away.

I would just use light wire hooks for your dries, and heavy wire hooks for your nymphs.
