View Full Version : Ran Away to Join the Circus

Loaded up the pontoon in the truck and ran off to my local put-n-take lake today to join the circus of frenzied fishermen. Waiting my turn patiently at the boat ramp, I witnessed lots of fathers and their children, grandpas and grandkids gathering their gear and hitting the water. The great trout hunt has begun. Mega knots and nylon line, food and drinks, enough clothing for several days, and an immeasurable supply of energy launched each boat one by one. After awhile I found myself out on the water fiddlin' with my own fishing gear and that's when it happened, the joys of genius filling the air.
Most children who fish possess special powers, powers of sight, sound, and knowledge. I heard a young boy exclaim "I got a nibble and didn't even know it!" Later a little girl cried out " Go back, go back Daddy, there's a fish back there!" Another youngster reveled as he reeled in a fish, "Grandpa, I could fish all day for the rest of my life!"
It was magic, pure magic all day. Dreams came true, memories were made, anticipations met and much more. That's what happens at the circus, especially when the skies are blue, the water's clear and the fish come out to play.
When it was time, I headed for home. I put the boat back in its place, put the fishing gear away and started supper. For me the day will come to an end soon but not for all. For some, when their tired little eyes close and their breathing slows, they'll drift back toward the water, re-living the day.
Hope your day was just as fun, see ya' on the water.

Awesome post, memories they will never forget and lessons they will pass on to their kids. My 7 year old boy always says, "When I am a Dad I am going to take my little boy fishing just like you do".
Always warms my heart when he says that!
Well said Scott!

Very nice story, it catches the essence.
I wish my day went as well. My lovely daughter brought the kids over to go fishing, hungry and with out a nap. The couple of hours on the lake was not as fun as the last time, even though I had snacks. The sun was nice. Only one tug near the end of the day, and foolish me didn't set the hook. Both kids we fast asleep in the truck in about 2minutes.
I guess we'll just have to do it again.

I bet you have kids. If not, you should. I don't know you, but I like you already. I'm glad to see an adult notice and appreciate those 'little' things that are such huge things. My little 4 year old reminds of that every day.
It's the best.

A generous post. It’s been a dozen years since my son caught his first trout from one of the Wyoming creeks I fished with my dad.
