I'm thinking of upgrading my vice and also keep the price below $200. Vices that come to mind are the Regal, Renzetti, and Nor-vice to name a few. Any recommendations on these vices or something else? The one thing I do like about the Regal is what I feel the simplistic nature of putting the hook in the vice. I did try and locate old threads, but didn't come across any. Maybe I didn't look carefully enough. If there are old threads, I'll be glad to go read them.
Thanks.

Lots of good choices out there. I've used a Regal for years and it has been great. Never found a need to upgrade it for what I tie.

The Renzetti Traveler is a popular choice.

The Nor-Vise with the new adjustable fine point jaw system. You can do most anything with it.

Can't say enough about Regal. Have had it for years. Works beautifully.
If you want a "true rotary" probably not the best choice. But otherwise, rock solid, american made, jaws hold very tight.

I use the DynaKing Jr Trekker at my home tying station and I use a Regal knockoff for a portable tying station when camping. The DynaKing is very well-built and it's nice to have the rotary feature. Probably the only vise I'll ever need. Might be able to find one on sale for under $200. The Regal's simplicity is great as well (and folds into a nice easily storable size for portability).
The truth is that any vise selling for between $100.00 and $200.00 is a good, well made vise that would last most tyers a lifetime. These are the mid-price range vises and although they may not have all the bells and whistles of the $300.00+ ones, a person really can't go wrong with any of them, provided he/she likes the vise. Simply decide whether you want rotary or non-rotary, pick one you like, and get it. It is really that simple.

Try the Danvise. Cabela's has it for around $80.

peak makes a good vice as well
Dude, the Dyna King Barracuda Jr. Trekker is the most versatile bad ass vise on the market.( in that Price range) Its a little over the 200 mark but it's the only vise you'll ever need. Buy it.

Thanks for your input guys. Really appreciated since I know a question like mine probably recirculates every so often. For grins I checked out the Regal Engineering site and saw they had a rotary vice, though a little spendy. However, I'll decide whether or not to go rotary, pick out one I like, then buy it. Again, thanks.

I was just recently in the same boat as you - trying to decide on a new vise. I decided to get a rotary vise and I ended up going with the DK Jr. Trekker - I couldn't be happier. I was also looking at the Renzetti Traveler but kept reading too many negatives reviews about the customer service and quality of this vise for the cost. I never found a negative comment written about the Dyna King (or their customer service). After trying them out side by side, I found that I preferred the DK. It is a very well build vise and is a bit larger than the Traveler - which I liked. Again, I am very happy with my choice. I recommend checking out this vise. Try them out first if you can.
BTW- the Trekker is available under $200. good luck.

I was at the FFF conclave in Ellensburg this weekend and noticed a definite trend - Renzetti traveler, and Regal seemed to be the most prevalent with Norvise close behind. Everything else was represented but not nearly as many. I did not see a single $500-600 vise in the group. and I saw more than one old school Thompson A.

My vote for affordable, and functional is Griffin's odyssey. I have upgraded the jaws to a cam leaver as opposed to the double knob which lasted many years as well. It has a rotary function, material spring clip, bobbin arm, ect. I also purchased a felt soled iron square base for it as well, as I don't prefer to use the table clamp. All together I have about $120 in the set up, and find it more than adequate for tying everything I need for our western salt and fresh water rivers and lakes.
My two cents =)

use both the renzetti traveler and the danvise. the danvise is very lightweight and stronger than one would think. (plastic stigma) great for packing along with you. comes with a good dvd for set up and operation. very tough to beat for the cost. good choice for a first vice IMHO. you can get another vise after you determine your interest. doesn't everyone have three or four vises?

Get one with a cam lever jaw. Seriously! You will be much happier for it. Even once is too often when a jaw-tightening finger-screw somehow binds up, and you can't loosen it. I really don't like having to take a pair of pliers to my tying vise. That's why I recently swapped out jaws to go with a cam lever. I am so much happier for it--though it cost me about $75 to upgrade a vise that cost me less than that.

Vices, LOL I have both Norvise and Danvise, both are great but
the norvise is just faster at what it does. If you are nimble and have fast hands you could probably get by with the double aa. If not look at the options of each one. Think they all have a website.
