I'm looking into getting a Lowe Roghneck with an e tec 50 horse jet prop, 16-17 feet. Does anyone have any advice on going with a tiller or console? Thanks, appreciate any advice.

Tiller is a little more quick on the steer but personally I prefer console, seeing the water is more important to me than a quick steer.

I have a 17.5' center console and have fished out of my friend's 16.5' tiller. Lots more usable room in the tiller.

Tiller for these reasons:
-Tillers are quicker to steer
-If you hit something with a tiller and your motor isn't locked it won't leave you with a smoking stump like a console will
-Consoles add weight, more weight means more power required to get on step, you will go slower and draw more water
-You can see the water just fine with a tiller a console gives you no advantage there
-The controls are all in one hand with a tiller, I find that much easier to use

17' Montauk Whaler console. Unsinkable.

your vessel might be underpowered......i have a merc 90 on a 16.5 open custom weld...and I think a 50 would take a very long time to plane w three people

Big difference between a roughneck and a customeweld, those roughnecks dont need much power.

I run a 60/40 Merc 2-stroke pump on my 1660, it is perfect with 2 people, 3 works but requires a little more attention but still functions great.
My vote is for tiller. When I bought mine 2 years ago I was worried that the learning curve on a tiller would be more than I wanted to deal with. Its not bad at all and the space you gain is well worth it, not to mention the 1k you'll save.

Tiller - more usable space, simpler maintenance and less to go wrong. Not much difference in seeing the water unless you go to a forward console.
The only thing I'd miss about a console is a windshield, which does make extended runs that much more pleasant.
Just my .02,

Fish by yourself go with the console. Fish with a crowd go with the tiller. Better balance with the console.
