Does anyone have any experiences tying with Buffalo hair? I was given some by a friend and was wondering what people thought.

I picked up a couple of hanks of shed buffalo hair along the Firehole a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I misplaced it before getting home. It certainly looked like it would work great for streamer patterns and it should bleach and/or dye quite well.

Buffalo hair comes in a wide variety of textures and lengths depending on which part of the body it came from. It ranges from soft under fur suitable for dubbiing to stout bristles for tails, legs and antennae.

A friend of my wife is in the buffalo hair buisiness. Consequently I have more buffalo hair than I know what to do with. I believe she said that there were seven different distinct types of hair on an adult buffalo.

Like most tying materials you are only limited by your imagination.

The long silky hair in the beard and tail make great streamer wings and the underfur makes pretty good dubbing.
