Of course I would love to catch fish, but my primary goal is to hook up with an experienced (and talkative) guide and get as much knowledge out of him/her as possible. This is much more of a long-term investment than just looking to get a picture taken with a B-run.

I’ve been fishing the smaller rivers in the area during the late winter/spring over the last few years and I feel I have that somewhat figured out, but don’t really have a clue about the fall situation. I’m guessing this will lead me down a path towards getting a spey rod?

Anyhow, does anybody feel good about recommending a flyfishing steelhead guide on the Clearwater River? Thanks! ]]>

Tandy and I just finished a weekend with Jason (Orangeradish) and his son Matt, fishing the Icicle, shooting the popguns, playing with the famed MacDonald hounds, beating up on the trout at Rocky Ford, and generally having the time of our lives. For those of you who haven't met Mr. O`Radish, he's a stellar guy, followed closely-on his heels literally-by his son Matt. And you guys DON'T want to be helping Matt with fishing tips, because in about two years or less, he'll be kicking our butts (he's only 10, but double hauls better than most of us grownups do!). We started the weekend with a Friday trip to Rocky Ford. I was sure we'd be there with the rest of the planet, but was shocked to find we had the place virtually to ourselves. Jason lingered by the bridge to have a go at those big cruisers that're always hanging around, and I took Matt down to the diversion. He hit on his second cast, and had brought maybe six fish to hand before his skunked dad showed up. He'll have to post the photos of these fish, since I was on the net, and didn't take any. We then relocated to the big bend, where Mr. O`Radish struck a nice hog! I went out earlier up the Icicle, and picked out a campsite at Ida Creek Campground for them. There are only ten sites here, and it's right on the Icicle. We shot pistols at Rocky Ford, rifles up on Mountain Home Road, fished, and ate our way through the weekend, and had a great time! Can't wait to get together again, this time with his entire clan!

It is a nice park called Riverscene Park. I had been there until sunset the night before, and had seen only one other person fishing. Today, I came back and went to a favorite spot to cast and looked into the water and saw four fish carcasses. I pulled them out of the water, and set all of them further up the bank near a rock. There turned out to be 4 salmon and two more tails of other fish (steelhead?!)

At least 2 of the fish appeared to be Chinook salmon, the other two were could have been Coho or steelhead and the two tails only fish were steelhead probably. They were fully fileted and whoever caught them thought that they could get away with dumping the remains, which ended up not floating down river.

I was so ANGRY!!!!!!! I called 911 asking for a WDFW agent and the operator had no idea of what I was talking about, and switched me to the WSP, saying it was under their jurisdiction. They took no interest, took my name and number and said someone would call me back (they haven't of course). Coincidentally, a Snohomish County Parks person happened to come buy to pick up trash. I showed here the carcasses and she said that while she was sorry, there was nothing she could do about it. She said that she had once come across people "snagging" fish who had buckets filled with wild steelhead and salmon who didn't speak English and gestured that they didn't know about "rules" or having valid licenses, etc and were let go with a warning. There apparently, according to her is only one WDFW agent, a young woman for all of Snohomish County.

Friends, these were wild fish, adapose fins attached, taken away from the gene pool. What are YOU willing to do? Would you be willing to help patrol parking lots late at night? Would you be willing to set up motion cameras, or what ever it takes to find evidence for convicting someone?

I have been fishing almost every day this summer, and have NEVER seen a WDFW agent or anyone else to ask me about my license or even just appear there, even thought places like Hazel, Oso, Cicero, Jordan Road, Hell Creek, etc are almost legendary.

Am I the only one outraged enough to do something? Has anyone ever mentioned in passing to a stranger, "Oh, do you have a fishing license?" or "Did you know (treble hooks), (buzz bombs) or what ever are not allowed on this river? I saw a gentleman just a few days ago, sneak up to Canyon Creek with his bait casting equipment who suddenly came back to his car almost running and left as quickly as he could. I wonder what was in his pocket!!!!

I am hoping these pictgures will give you an idea. A one-dollar bill is about 6-1/4 inches long. This gives you an idea of the size of these wild fish.

Swinging vs Nymphing - An Open Minded Perspective http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/board/showthread.php/71052-Swinging-vs-Nymphing-An-Open-Minded-Perspective?goto=newpost Sun, 05 Sep 2010 00:10:37 GMT Boy, I guess I’ve been really doing things wrong when it comes to steelhead. Sure I swing streamers, but this year I also swung chrinomids and nymphed ‘em too; I also nymphed some streamers and swung some globugs; I fished dries wet and swung some fluffy bunny jigs; I dead-drifted traditional steelhead patterns on a tip and tried skating greased-up leeches too; I also dead drifted big dries then sunk ‘em and swung ‘em and I put a dropper behind a big dry a bunch of times too; I even pegged a trout bead above a spey-style streamer and nymphed it and then later put a small dropper behind it and swung it. I made some SJ Worms from red glue sticks, plus minnows from Acrylic nail stuff, and streamers from craft store feather boas. I’ve nymphed a jig on a spey rod and tried a dry on a center pin. I caught a steelhead while dead drifting a Sofa Pillow for trout and caught a 28” cutty on a chrinomid I was nymphing for steelhead. Last year my best steelhead flies were a size 16 nymph and a chironomid but I also tried a 10” marabou streamer. Was I fly fishing when I was swinging a globug or when I was nymphing an Intruder? Or maybe it was when I swung a jig on a spey rod ‘cause it’s basically a streamer, right? And what the heck am I doing if I dead drift a dry fly way below the surface then let it swing at the end? Am I nymphing, swinging or swymphing? Somebody please help me figure out how to do this steelhead fly fishing stuff correctly ‘cause obviously I’m pretty confused...and it seems that some of the steelhead are too!

You know, I don’t play golf but limiting oneself to one method of fly fishing for any kind of fish seems about the same as playing 18 holes with only one club. Sure you can do it but why would you except to prove you could or because you like the challenge? Maybe if you did it often enough, you could be as effective as someone who used the right club for each shot, but why not just use the best club for the job? Likewise, if I waded a river from its source to its mouth to fish for trout, there will be parts that will best be swung and other parts that will nymph better and others that beg to have a dry fly dapped, dead drifted, skated or twitched; sometimes a big meaty streamer is the ticket, other times it’s a soft hackle, a dry or an emerger. If I had a gillie to walk the entire length of the river with me, he’d be carrying a bunch of fly rods ready to go with different set-ups and we’d study each piece of water and decide how to best (fly) fish it. If I only used one method of fly fishing, one presentation, one type of fly, I’d likely be skipping a bunch of productive water, that is, productive with the right technique/presentation/fly. For trout, guides routinely have different rods strung up with different set-ups in their drift boats and may switch back and forth from dries to nymphs to streamers to a dry/dropper combo as conditions dictate and no one questions if they are fly fishing or gear fishing. Do the same thing but change the word trout to steelhead and all of a sudden we are at war. I find it pretty comical, sad but comical. Sad because we should be fighting for these fish, not fighting each other.

Guys who are great at swinging will tell you it’s all about figuring out where the fish are holding, but I respectfully beg to differ, or at least qualify. I’ve fished with some good swingers. I’ve watched them walk right by water that held lots of fish. Why? Because just like fishing any other method, if you get really good at swinging, it means that you’ve figured out and intuitively recognize not the water that holds fish, but the water that holds fish that you know you can effectively make a presentation to. Simple as that. You are going to walk/float right by water that is full of fish but that you can’t effectively get a fly in front of by swinging. As one gets better at it, sure one will get better at effectively swinging/presenting a fly in more and more types of situations but the bottom line is that you’ve figured out not simply where the fish are, but where you, given your skill level, can make an effective presentation on the swing. All that great water you pass up? Anybody who can make an effective presentation is going to pull fish out and it just might take a different method to make an effective presentation in that water. I’d say someone who can effectively present the right fly in any and all types of holding water is the real master.

So Swing, Dead Drift, Skate, Dap, Nymph, etc., there are times and types of water/structure where one method will work better than another, but if one wants to limit themselves to only the type of structure best suited to their chosen method, why bash people who want to fish all the holding water? If you are so good at catching steelhead that you’re bored and need to challenge yourself by only skating or swinging or dapping or whatever, fine but why bash the guys who enjoy fly fishing other ways and insult them by telling them they aren’t fly fishing? I may like to tie flies blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back and it would be cool, but it doesn’t mean everyone should have to or that they aren’t really tying flies if they don’t. Most guys who swing sometimes use tips and according to the WDFW rules for fly fishing only waters, one can make an argument that tips are just a type of weight attached to the fly line so maybe all the guys who use tips aren’t fly fishing either, LOL, they are just dirty gear guys. Plus many guys I know, even ones who rail on and on against nymphing for steelhead, intentionally dead drift their streamer at some point (and not for mending) and sorry, dead drifting subsurface is basically nymphing. Like I said, the whole thing is comical.

So why for pity's sake, is it fly fishing to nymph for resident trout but not anadromous ones? Is it simply the indicator? What if I didn’t use one? Why is it fly fishing to swing big ass ugly streamers with a trailing hook on a heavy tip, let alone a tube fly that legally isn't even a fly, but it’s not fly fishing to dead drift a tiny sz 20 beadhead pheasant tail? I can do it for resident trout and be fly fishing and you probably did it last week, but why is it suddenly not ok for anadromous trout? Will somebody please tell me why? I mean, after all they are the same friggin’ fish, probably some of them from the same redd as their resident brethren. So why all this hatin’? Why shouldn’t I be hatin’ on all the swingers because they should really just be dead drifting dries all the time? Sure it will be a challenge in the dead of winter but so what? It’s the purest form of fly fishing according to some, so quit your dirty swinging of big ugly streamers on tips and dead drift dries year-round…kind of ridiculous, huh, but no more so than the swing/nymph argument if you take a step back.

What I see is when we let a little machismo get involved, these sea-run rainbows turn into some kind of magical mystical beast with super-powers, a kind of holy grail that deserves to be caught only by the (self-declared) worthy using the methods they deem holy enough. Sure the mystique, the allure sells, but in the end it’s just marketing hype - they are trout. Don’t get me wrong, I love steelhead, I dream of steelhead, I sometimes think about them to the determent of my job, my house, my yard, even my relationships. They are amazing creatures, especially my local Upper Columbia ones who swim hundreds of miles and tackle 9 dams in order to return home. I have literally lost sleep over their imperiled status and have done what I can to try to help their plight. I love steelheading. I will be out there fishing on Wednesday when my local rivers open trying to remove hatchery fish and someday I will testify before the Commission again about wild steelhead release or other such things, but in the end, I don’t kid myself, I know they are just friggin’ rainbows - ok, big strong ones that deserve our respect and protection, but they are just rainbows – so get over it. Call them ‘steelhead’, ‘metalheads’, ‘gray ghosts’ and all the other magical, mystical macho names and fish ‘em however you want, but let others do the same. They are trout. If you want to buy into the mystique, the legend, the search for the holy grail, fine but some people don’t buy it or are immune to the marketing (of rods, guides, dvd’s, lines, books, ugly tweed hats and everything else the hype helps sell) and they just want to fish for big strong trout. So fish ‘em like trout, heck fish ‘em like bass, fish ‘em like they are the last pure virginal thing on earth if you want, but shut the f@#* up about those who choose a different presentation than you because that’s all we’re really talking about in the end - presentation. Sure, you’ll probably see me presenting a fly on the swing as well as other ways because I really did do all of thse things and more, and maybe I will think up some other crazy things to try this year. Who knows, maybe after 36 years of fly fishing, I’m a little bored, or maybe I like to think outside the box and try to figure out other things that might work, or maybe I’m just a dirty, dirty flyfishergal who likes to catch fish and who is one step away from Boraxing some eggs (joking - really!). In the end, I really don’t give a hoot what you think I am or what you think about how I fly fish. I know I am a fly fisher and that’s all that matters to me.

PS. Anybody got an extra Thingamabobber I can use with a Lady Caroline on the Wenatchee this week, LOL?! ]]>
