    TFO Rod/Sage Xp

Has anyone ever gotten to cast the new Temple Fork TiCr - x side by side with a sage XP. How do they compare. I don't care about brand name at all, i love the action of my sage xp and am looking for a less expensive fast action rod.

Try the TCR by Sage...just kiddin

While I have not personally casted one I have heard nothing but great reviews about the TiCR. But I do own two XP's and would not trade for anything.....simply a great casting, fishing, and attractive looking rod.

    Good Luck

PS what weight where you looking at?....might make a difference.

    Xp/ Tfo

I have a 590 xp and believe it is the most versitile trout rod in the world. This spring I wanted to get a second 5wt and cast the TiCR and the professional side by side in a 15mph wind. I was surprised that I preferred the action of the professional better. I thought the action was plenty fast and preferred the slightly softer tip. Reds on the Yakima always has both models to cast. I broke a guide and the repair was back in less then 2 weeks. I'm pleased with the poduct.

i purchased some of the 8 wt. ticr-x's this summer for salmon fishing in the salt... and they are cannons. i find myself grabbing them instead of more expensive saltwater rods.

of course, with all rod purchases you should cast one first. only you will be able to tell if it's a better fit for your casting stoke than an xp (which are exceptional rods). but if you like a fast action cannon, the ticr-x should be a rod you at least test drive before buying anything more expensive.

    no contest

    are you kidding?
the XP is clearly a better rod. hand made, designed by legends, fishable, castable, beautiful, damn near perfect.

    tfo? plastic!

I have a sage Xp 4pc 4wt which has become my go to rod for all fishing except salmon and steelhead. I bought the blank and built it after casting it alonside several other rods at a flyshop one day. The first time that i have been able to compare Rods that way. However i am even having a hard time justifying the $300 to build it myself, so i have been considering the TFO and Rainshadow rod in 4pc 8 wt. All opinions will be cosidered. I will have to drive at least an hour to find one to cast so i will weigh these before i select my test location

Try looking at the Loomis Stream Dance Metolius series. They are about half as much as the XP and are just as fast. I have an XP in a 5 wt and the Metolius in a 4 and 6. Grat rods.

    both are great!

Jumbo is smoking something funny. The TiCr-X is a great rod!

I own both the XP and the TiCr-X. If someone said I could have one stick, without consideration for price, it would be a tough choice for me between an XP and a GLX Classic. However, the TiCr-X is an absolute great value. I believe the XP 5 and 6 weight rods are much nicer than the TiCr-X rods, but my 8 weight TiCr-X (which is what I think Captain Chris is now using out at Neah Bay) is a wondeful, powerful rod that compares favorably with my XP. But overall, though, the XP is a better rod, in my opinion. By a lot? No, unless it's in the lower rod weight. My Sage 590-4 XP is an incredibly versatile rod.

I agree 100% about with lcconrad about the Metolius rods, I tried about 8 different rods at Puget Sound Fly Co. and the Metolius and the XP cast better then any of the other rods I tried.

I also like the TFO rods but never was able to cast them.

    TFO Vs XP

There is nothing wrong with using a less expensive rod. I Love Sage rods and even named by dog after the company, but I also like TFO' s as well. You defenitly get the bang for the buck. The rod blank is what you are really paying for. You can tell that the farels and reel seat are poor incomparison to Sage rods, but the the TFO's are excellent. I was suprised the first time I casted one and even more suprised when I caught my first fish with one. Don't let people with big egos and wallets scare you away from them. However I think if you want a quality rod that will last a lifetime then I would go for a Sage. Remember you will enjoy catching fish with that rod not admiring it for its looks.

    Jumbo,
Lefty Kreh isn't a legend? TFO rods are plastic? I'm confused!

    clarification

i have cast both extensively and the xp is a superior prouct. I think most responses say the same thing on this thread. Lefty is a legend, but as a fisherman not a rod designer.

    Agreed

    Jumbo, agreed.

But don't be dissing the TiCr-X; it's a great rod. At it's price point, I don't think there is a better rod out there. However, as I noted in my post, if price is not a consideration, then I would take the XP. Or a GLX Classic (not the GLX Streamdance).

I don't want to criticize the whole subject but.. everytime a discussion of rods comes up it seems as pointless as asking other people which girl you should marry.
    Cast them both.
Sage Rods are made right here in Washington. That makes them worth more to me already, but you should decide for yourself.

    my 2 cents…

first, why are you limiting your search to only sage, TFO and rainshadow? there are mucho fast 8 weights out there to try. too many to name here.

second, TFO is just one of several companies that has recently entered the marketplace with a line high quality “value” fly rods. they have garnered most of the attention, though, because Lefty Kreh (my hero and fellow Marylander) is their chief consultant. and remember, Lefty was a sage man long before TFO came along.

third, this spring i purchased a TFO professional 4 weight 4 piece as a back up and to see for myself what all the hype was about. nice casting rod and it seems to suit my “style” and fishing needs. i use it quite a bit and i’m happy with it. of course, since i’m a schizoid i’ll probably want to try something different sooner rather than later. anyway, i’ve seen and held the other rods in the TFO line including the TiCr-x but have not cast them. IMHO the fit and finish on all the TFO rods is nowhere near that of sage, winston, T&T, etc… like many have said before me, you gotta go cast ‘em for yourself. it’s not a one-size-fits-all world.

so… sounds like you’re already a member of the XP fan club. go cast the 8 and if you like it and have the jack, get it. if not, continue searching and casting ‘til you find one that you like.

now that you mention it, i'm in the mood for a new 8 weight, too.
