Fly rod coming apart
Hey I"m new here so If this is in the wrong forum I'm sorry.
any how I have an old Eagle claw 8.5' 7wt and it's keeps coming apart in the middle, not flinging out but I notice it cause it spins alittle. should I get a new rod? or is there a remedy? thanks
Neil.

Does it have metal Ferrals
If it is what I'm thinking about it has metal ferrals or what ever they are called. If they are try to get it off and try a little super glue or ferral cement. Or just go out to any local fly shop and look for a new rod.
That is just about all I know about fixing a old rod as all I use is a few newer rods.

It sounds like you are ready for a little better fly rod. You will spend a lot of time and energy and still have a rod that is marginal. That is only my opinion.
I bought Eagle Claw for my small kids as they learned. When the younger kids were ready for fly rods, I bought better rods, even though the are tough on them. The best buy is most likely not the cheapest.
Good luck and WELCOME aboard!

I think you're right, the rod is so old it was made in the states , now just gotta find the "one" but since cash is at an all time low I might have to get a Pflueger for cheep Northern sales sells them for like $40 bucks and I get 30% off.
Thank you for the welcome.

Try taping
A little black 3m electrician's tape will do for a temp fix. Spey fishers often tape their sections together.

Jim it has a metal female and a male insert, ya know, where ya break the rod down.

It may not look great, but the blue painters masking tape will work. It is easier to remove and won't leave a black residue like electrical tape will.

try rubbing a candle on the male portion before trying tape....wax might add enough "shim" to keep if from spinning

Ahhhhh, old metal ferrules
Actually, the old glass EC's weren't bad rods. Depends on the blank (is it yellow or fenwick brown?). The older EC's were good rods. Just wish they cut them magnum taper with the metal ferrules.
Check the ferrule. Some of the older EC's (before the yellow blanks) had a small groove at the tip of the male ferrule. You may be missing the rubber gasket that forms the seal and tightens the blank. Easy fix, and can use the braces rubberbands for a quick fix. I still have an old fenwick 7wt that I still fling around (I made it myself when I was around 10-11 and had to cut blank and put metal ferrule in). Is a great trout rod. I would even swing down to a 5wt on my 7wt. So limber, that a 5wt will load it just fine.

It's yellow. I just cleaned it up and put some chapstick on the male end (friends suggestion) No it doesn't have a groove for a O-ring. I want to get a new rod but what maker should I grab for a budget rod with decent action?
thanks for all the help.

I have a W.W. Grigg rod 5 weight that I bought at Sportsman Warehouse for 40 bucks. It is nice rod moderate fast action. I bought for a spare but I find myself reaching for it quite a bit for the fishing I do. Look for them on the internet WWgrigg.com for a dealer near where you live.

Ah, ok
Yeah, it's one of the cheapies then. LOL. Right before they were bought out by berkely I do believe. The old brown ones were really nice actually. Yeah, some parafin wax would do the trick.
I'd definitely move up from that sweetheart rod (that should be the type of flyrod it is if it's a yellow EC).

Havok
Since you live in Stanwood you could go to Hook,Line, and Sinker in Arlington and see what they have or maybe Jerry's Surplus in Everett. They always have a few fly rods on sale there.
As you are just beginning you should start out with something you can afford and as things get better and you like it you can always upgrade to something better. I think that we all seem to start out that way at least I did and now I have two or three rods that will do me to my dying day and they didn't cost an arm and a leg.
Just one Cheap old man who knows what's up.
