Definitely not fly fishing....I'm not tring to take away his right to fish that method or his pursuit of happiness.
Hopefully this doesn't catch fire like "Beads" and become an "alternative way to flyfish".
Kind of like the "chuck 'n duck" technique that was going around in the 90's, slinky weight tied to shooting line, I think they were chucking egg patters.
Whatever floats your boat, huh?
just thinkin' out loud here, but any idea how 1 ft of bicycle chain grains out?
I'm thinking superubermegashort skaj, the next new wave in shooting heads.
you rig a no slip mono loop to the inside of the link for better action? maybe a piece of 12 lbs on the back and 8lb off the front, connect the 12lb to the shooting line. you might lose alot of chains.
All Scott Howell said about long lines was the obvious; not being able to cast in tight spaces like the one he is casting from (Scott Howell), and fatigue being a limiting factor in the amount one fishes.
Exactly! Not sure why those "purists" got worked up so much... and believe it or not...most of the skagit casters/masters I know also fish eh....the long lines...and have fun with it in certain conditions. I am sure those "Purists" will take this statement as an insulting...see a great report from Rick below, I am sure they all had a heck of fun! monoliner, biliner, triline... whatever...
Hi Mark
I remember that thread. Speaking of which, Ms Gould will be instructing at SOR Member's Day too.
Better drive on down there, it's an opportunity you won't want to miss. View attachment 47506
Fatigue with a long line? Lets weight the alternative...600 grain skagit with a 12' of t14, every water borne cast needs an addtional mini cast to set up the anchor, stripping and shooting gobs of line even for a short 70' cast.
I think the right answer is "trade-off" ...yes skagits are clunky, take more work/energy but are very forgiving and get the heavy junk I need to feel confident fishing, to a depth I feel confident fishing. I personally don't like to use skagits, not oppossed to skagit use I just find other systems more enjoyable.
James.
