Steelhead flies

So, I like tying for saltwater and I think squid patterns are pretty cool. To that end I have found a simple one that I really like ( and was wondering what others thought about this fly as a steelhead fly given other flies like the GP and Intruder that imitate a similar food source (OK, the Intruder, the GP is a shrimp, either way they are both a saltwater food source being used in fresh water). Thoughts?

I think that fly would work for sure. Looks like a large profile and steelhead eat squid already. Swing it!

Yeah, I guess it kind of does look like a marabou, but it won't relax as much in the water and thus I believe it will give a more true profile. I have tied a few of these and really like the way they look.

I had thought about the stinger, but with the way the eye is done I wasn't sure how nicely they would play together. Perhaps I'll try a few with 30 lb firewire attaching the stinger, make it a little stiffer and perhaps keep it away from the eyes.

I have hosed Kings on a similar pattern, steelhead would like them.

I also thing you need a stinger hook with that unless you like tugs without hookups.

You Could somehow attach the Eye to the stinger hook. That way you would be able to have an eye and the stinger. Use 30LB Fireline. It should be stiff enough.

Supporting wild steelhead, gravel to gravel.
I believe the main food source for steelhead while in the ocean is squid, a fly the correct sz/color/profile should kick ass for fresh fish.
