Yup. Go to the Fly Fisher and talk to Bjorn. He is a great guy. He's not a nympher (at least not by choice), but he'll sit down and show you a thing or two that will work. While you're there, check out his assortment of custom steelhead flies (summer and winter). He ties lots of big, fishy stuff.
I do 99% of my nymphing for steelhead on the Deschutes in Central Oregon. My go-to triple fly rig is a large Double Bead Stonefly Nymph in Peacock first, followed by a big rubber leg purple Copper John, followed by some sort of large soft hackle. 60% of the time, it works every time.
A size 6 silver or gold lightning bug can be deadly. Not talked about much...but they can kick complete steelhead ass. If you want some pizzaz add rubber legs. Trail a lifter or glo bug off the back and your getting pretty dirty.
