The correct way to tie a clouser is to tie in the belly in the manner you describe (look at the OP's picture) and the back is only tied in in front of the dumbell eyes (again look at the OP's picture).
The manner in which I tie a Clouser is very close to the original Bob Clouser method. I prefer a shorter shank hook therefore the angle (or step) is greater at the forward and rear portion of the eyes than Bob Clouser's. The downfall is the material, depending on which you prefer, may shear/shred at the hump of the barbell.
The method you mention appears (to me) to be the Thunder Creek series of flies... less the lead eyes.... although I could be mistaken.
Then again, there are quite a few ways to simplify the "Clouser" style.
