Quit bragging. Our fish in Washington are getting harder and harder to catch.. I know that it says I'm in Montana but I did fish in Washington for many, many years.

I have caught steelhead and I did it with a fly, bait, and a spinner. I just don't with to waste my time fishing for them anymore. Besides I prefer fishing for Trout. These are not fish of a 10,000 casts.

Real steel goes to the salt.

Someday someone will explain to me how a rainbow that never touches salt water nor has to make any adjustments to salt water from a biological perspective becomes a steelhead. To me those are rainbows. Big assed, big shouldered hard fighting rainbows, but nethertheless rainbows. Just because their ancestors are steelhead, does not make these fish steelhead. Hell every rainbow has the potential to be a steelhead if saltwater is available. But there is no saltwater available there in the Great Lakes unless the smolts make a pretty good trek, and end up out off the east coast and then come all the way back and that aint happening much is it? And this is not a slight nor my fragile Northwest steelhead ego talking, the whole concept has always intrigued me. Kurt, Salmo, anybody want to chime in on this one and explain to me how we put an asterisk in the books concerning the great lakes and now consider these freshwater lake run rainbows steelhead? Coach

PS Excuse the ignorance, but I don't know much about at all about the Great Lakes Lake run rainbows.

kruggy1, maybe you could pry yourself away from the Erie coast and try your luck in WA? OMJ & topwater make valid points. Fish on the swung fly can come tough in the GL basin [and congrat's with your nice ones] but not quite the same accomplishment.

I dont know all the technicalities either, but from what I understand since there lake or saltwater bound and not just sitting in a river there called steelhead. But for all who it make a difference too i will change it " HERE'S A 9LB RAINBOW ", any better?? As for why i posted them on a wahington site is because I dont see any other steelies or RAINBOWS being posted ,just figured SOME OF YOU MIGHT OF FORGOT WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE!!!!;) Again thanks to all the other fellow fly fisherman who are interested in what the eastern side has to offer, seeing how we all struggle for success:thumb:

You dont know how much I would loved to fish out there in the west coast, I consider you all lucky, unlike some im not prejudice against one coast or another. I wish you all could be fortuneate to cach plenty of steel and salmon out there. I give you ALL alot of respect for going out time and time again even though chances of hookin up are slight. Plus i was just goofin with OLD MAN just givin him some grief, no disrespect to him or any of you...:D.
I didnt think posting some eastern fish porn would get so many panties in a bunch!!!

My post was meant as friendly banter between the GL region and their lake run fish, the NW region and our ocean running steelhead.:thumb:

Personally I haven't fished for the GL fish but I have talked to people that have fished for and caught both GL fish and Pacific steelhead. They seemed to have a good time at both locations. Some might argue that the salt gives the fish more strength and spirit. Thinking that the ocean is a tougher environment to survive in, I would tend to agree. But, I would not turn down the opportunity to fish the Great Lakes if it ever presented itself.
