My wife was invited to speak at a conference last week in Anchorage so I got to "tag along". Did a bit of research before going knowing I would have 2 full days all to myself to fish. For those in the know Alaska can have some excellent fly fishing for resident fish in May. Many rivers are closed to protect spawning Rainbows (the Kenai for example)but since Dolly Varden are basically off limits in this state I set myself on those.
Hired a guy by the name of Mike Coughlin who owns Susitna Valley River Guides with his wife. He's based out of Willow (1 1/2 hours north of Anchorage). Super knowledgeable and friendly guy. We rode a hired jet boat up the Talkeetna River to the confluence with Clear Creek. His raft came along and at the end of the day floated back to the launch. Had good weather.
Caught some big Dolly's. These are some powerful fish that put a real bend in the 6wt. The setup is heavy 12ft leaders with 10lb tippet on a floating line. Split shot to get it down. We used a bead to simulate an egg and then a smolt pattern on the dropper. Most took the bead. Had a 20 fish day including my 6-7 LDR's.
When you handled these fish they would vomit up rainbow eggs and salmon fry. They were just loaded!!!!
If you are in the anchorage area and want to target resident fish on the fly I would really recommend Mike. (He has a web site). He told me also does 2-3 day trips down Clear creek and I hope to get back and do that sometime.
There is also one picture here of a Rainbow I caught in a lake near Wasilla. This one was smaller than one I hooked earlier in the day while a group of people stood watching on a nerby dock. Enjoy the fish porn!!!

    Powder monkey,
I'm not sure what the CFS was but the river was (clear creek) was running clear and creating a nice seem where it joined with the Talkeetna. We did not wade/walk up clear creek but instead just stayed in the confluence area where we knew there were fish at that time.
According to the guide I was fishing with he said he stops fishing there after May because it just gets too crowded.
