Whats up all? It's been awhile since I have heard anything about pass lately, anyone been out recently? I was just wonding how she's been fishing after all the cold weather over the last couple weeks. Not looking for any patterns or specifics, just how people have been doing out there. Hey SA - I got a surprise get-outa-jail-free card this weekend and got up there. For these conditions I thought it fished pretty well (surface is 42...feet were cold but they didn't hurt). What I like is it's fishing a bit tough but in a good way. Challenging but lots of action if you think and work hard. They'll hit all day but late morning and late afternoon both had a push (dies off about 4:15). Two places I was finding them - suspended ~10ft anywhere but outer shoals were most productive; and also against shore at times. Shoreline was on-again-off-again throughout the day...work the shallow weedy areas, if no strikes for 15 min change up and go back to the depths. I was doing cast-move-strip (Type V) for those deeper ones and having good success. No secret pattern...they'll bang any good lake fly if you can locate them. I threw a #8 leech all day...nothing to do with imitation, it simply casts and sinks the way I want it to. Spotted this feeding against shore yesterday before dusk...that's how the day ended. Sweet fish, it's not suppose to rain this week. I might head up there or at least fish Lone. Gotta find the long johns first.
Ya that was me. Thanks for taking the time to give me some advice. I didn't catch anything but you definately put me in the right spot to catch some fish. After seeing so many rise I tried switching to a floating line and a ehc but could get anything. It just wasn't my day, second time I've been skunked there.
Pass is famous for that...plus this 40 degree water is tough on everyone. You'll get it dialed in, no problem. Looks like you've already put some work into that cast so the rest will work itself out just by showing up a few more times. Good luck & have fun out there...
EHC? My first guess would have sent me to a chironomid emerger pattern. Caddis are so few and far between in Puget Sound Lowland lakes and never during winter. Winter is the time for leech, minnow, chironomid, predacious beetle, and dragonfly nymph patterns. --Dave E.
Picked up a 14" 'bow at the far end on a white wooly, sinking intermediate. That was my only bite on a 3-hour afternoon trip. None were rising. Beautiful day on the lake, though.
Those winter hatches on Pass are tough! I've tried a lot to make something happen when I see them rising, but so far it's been unproductive. I've tied patterns to match the tiny little bugs they're eating, but that hasn't worked either. It's fun to try though. Upfisher, an EHC is my favorite dry fly for Pass in the summer. I like a 14-16 sized dark wing model. That fly's accounted for a lot of fish rising along the shoreline, including some hefty browns.
Lostcreeker and I hit Pass last Sunday (17th). Very kind of him to provide the ride, as my truck was still in the shop. I finally shed my skunk. Brought two trout to hand: One brown at around 20" and a 'bow at around 16". Had a few missed strikes and short-lived LDR's, but, despite my rustiness and the slow fishing, I left feeling like I finally regained my previously lost mojo. Basically, I was finding fish where I thought they would be. Life is good once again. :beer1: BTW, saw only one or two rises, but no hatches. I stuck with an Intermediate sink like and found fish most responsive to my standard peacock-bodied Carey Special. Tight Lines! --Dave E.
Thanks for the shout, guys! It was my intention to fish as much as possible when I returned from shipping out. That was back in November. Alas, that turned out not to be. The weather didn't cooperate and my truck spent the better part of the past month in the shop. IOW's life has been conspiring against fishing opportunities.
