hi zen leecher- It is not a giant water beetle, and Backswimmers are not in family Corixidae. However it is in fact a Backswimmer. I am researching that there are 2 or 3 genera in North America. Distinguishing features appear to be size and antenna segments. So I will guess it is either Buenoa or Notonecta. The latter being larger. I will call it Notonecta (50% chance?) Jay
