    During the off season I read Barry Thornton's book "Saltwater Fly Fishing for Pacific Salmon" from 1995. Thornton was one of the early pioneers of saltwater fly fishing for salmon who created the Silver Thorn pattern. This short book is incredibly insightful and quite entertaining. His tales of catching silvers and chinook from his boat along the coast of British Columbia motivate each time I re-read them. He also covers beach fishing for pinks in detail. The final chapter captures how he came to believe that salmon could be consistently caught on the fly over the course of several days fishing Quadra Island. This guy really understands salmon behavior and much can be learned from reading his books and old articles. If you haven't already read it, pick up a copy on Amazon for $10 or less.
