I've had the Olympus Stylus tough t8000 for ahwile now and have put it to the test. Not only has it held up surprisingly well but takes good pics and is pretty user friendly. Good luck and congrats on the grandson on the way, they're the best!

Best bang for the buck is the Nikon D3100, although if you want to pay a little extra I would recommend the Cannon T3i.

I've had the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 for about 2-1/2 years. Not one problem. I have dropped it maybe 3 times. It is water proof/shock resistant. It is 10 megapixal. Takes a beating and keeps on ticking. I like it!!! Easy to use.
