I caught a Chironomid yesterday and tied this up after watching these gnats getting taken out by rain and the trout taking the crippled surface film. It was fun to watch the gnats buzz around dippin' thier butts in the water and in one spot under a log was a trout that would surface but I could not get him out with a dry. Well should do the trick. Spalsh down and let sit and sink. . .like a spinner but for freshwater. The pic shows the bug I caught and one of patterns model after.

Holy smokin' jaybirds! That looks great! So I'd imagine you'd have to grease your leader up to a few inches of the fly, to get it to sit in or near the film, right?

No grease, I want it to sit right on the surface for about 15secs and then sink, the body is deer hair and the thorax is foam, but with no hackle a couple twitchs should sink it, I hope. I don't like to use any chemicals when stillwater fishing, only thing treatment I use is mud before I throw it in, to get the smell of the lake on the fly ;) .

The bug was a 14 so I tied a 14, If you ever seen a Okuma 10 compartment box, that critter is in one of those, goes to show how big they can become.
