So I've committed to taking one female and two 11-year-old boys car camping in Gifford Pinchot tomorrow, Saturday 9/12. Can some kind soul please point me to someplace I can car-camp that's not in a campground, and offers some access to water and some degree of solitude? HELP?? I HATE campgrounds. Thanks for any useful info. : )

There's almost none of the sort I describe above, to be had. I ended up going to plan B, and camping at a spot I know of about 45 minutes north.

I know I'm a little late on this, but if you go to the ranger station in Trout Lake, you can get a map of forest service roads that lead back to a number of small lakes. Some of these have actual campgrounds and others have individual sites along the perimeter of the lake. I've found some sites to be pretty easy and remote even on holidays. I'm sure some level of luck was involved, but we've scored a couple of time down there.
