    Cedar River Report--(Updated Pic)

Today I got the chance to wake up early, with no hangover fortunately, as opposed to Sat morn. and had my sights set on the Cedar River. I picked a dot on the map and headed out around 9am. The weather looked promising, slightly overcast, but not raining and I was envisioning catching my first fish on my new Z Axis 4wt.

When I arrived at my destination, I made sure that I parked with my car facing the highway, in clear sight. I was very pleased to see the amount of traffic passing by, where anyone could see my car being tampered with. I realized that my car might as well have a sign that says, "Please Take Me!" with the gear in the front seat and gear in the trunk worth mula.

As I got out and began putting on my waders, two other fly fisherpeople, caught the fact that I was competition and started putting their gear on faster. It was good to see other people there, since this was added security for my car not getting stolen. I made a bee-line for the river and was pleased to see that under the bridge, was a meth head. Well this is just great, the meth-hatch is in full swing and I am planning on walking far from where I was parked. Could this be a guy on meth, or an avid fly fisherman, who saves money from not having any mortgage payments, was a thought that crossed my mind:p

There were two great hatches going on simultaneously. One being mayfies that were brown in color and somewhat large. The other, not so prominent hatch, was a caddis emergence. Its wasnt going to be a dry fly day for me, I was set out to streamer fish, with new creations from the vice. I put on a sink tip that I made from T-14 sinking line, that was 6 feet in length. T-14 is 400 grain at 30' so 6' of it is about 70 grain. I tied on my steamer and a way I went.

I was fishing for over 4 hours and didn't have a bump to lay claim too. I did manage to take a ride on the Cedar River, after slipping in some turbid water and rode like Bradd Pitt in a "River Runs Through It," but with no fish on and a few four letter words thrown in.

Finally, after about 5 hours, I was desparate. With only a 4 shot espresso in me to metabolize, dehydrated and tired, I cut my leader down to two feet of leader and 2 feet of 1X floro. I swapped my 70 grain sink tip, to one that was 120 grain and tied on a tungsten cone head streamer. I knew I was going to snag the bottom with the contraption I had, but that might add some excitement to my day.

I shot my first cast out about 40 feet sightly upstream and was pleasanly surprised that my 4wt Z Axis, was not at all maxed on power. The leader slapped the water and I made about 2 strips and "Wammo!!!!!!!" Yea buddy, something was deep in the abyss and immediately knew it was hooked.

I never caught a gimpse of this fish throughout most of the fight. It screamed my line about 50-60 feet down stream and then shot back upstream. My rod was bent sharply and I played catch-up with the loose line on my reel. I got her back on the reel and then another screaming run began towards the tail out of this beautiful pool. This attracted the attention of two individuals that were sitting in thier home looking at the window. Prepared for them to yell at me for being near their property, they were in admiration about the progressing fight.

As the fish was sending my line screaming downstream, I had to take a stand. Beyond this tail-out were rapids that would end this fight for good. I stopped and tested the backbone of this rod as my rod and I horsed with all our might, this creature of the deep. I slipped and tripped my way towards the edge of the river and guided her into a small pocket of slack water. I quickly grabbed her tail and my audience now grew to 3 people that were amazed at her size. They asked if she was a Steelie, but I told them that it might be, but IMHO it was a large resident bow. A very kind woman took a quick snapshot of me and my slimy trophy and then I put her back into the water and with some minor assistance, away she went!!!

The numbers of fish caught today were not staggaring but the ones I did catch were healthy 13"+ bows that made this trip well worth it all!!!!

Just thought I'd let everyone know!!:thumb:

Nice, the Cedar is a slut of a river. Great fish, but it looks more like 12'' :thumb:
I can't wait for my finals to be done, I'll be on the cedar almost every day after that.

    Way to go,

    Derek
