Hmmm....kinda reminds of the oft-quoted phrase from the old "Pogo" comic strip by Walt Kelly: "We have met the enemy and he is us!"

Another quote by a German pastor, Martin Niemöller, about the Nazis rise to power in Germany:

"First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the socialists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for me,and there was no one left to speak for me."

Apply his statements to your favorite fishery!

We all need to be more involved in fisheries preservation and management and giving our input to the powers-that-be. Although I've often sent comments to the WDFW about proposed rule changes, I know I could be more pro-active instead of letting politicians and bureaucrats dictate how and when I fish. :(

    Thanks for the link, Rich!

I encourage anyone who cares about Pacific salmon to make contributions to their local Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group affiliate, Trout Unlimited, Adopt a Stream, or any of the other primarily riparian habitat restoration/conservation groups. Money or elbow grease, anything helps. I have been a habitat restoration technician working for RFEGs and state/county agencies, and the money just isn't there (or is not being used as efficiently as possible by the gov). The most effective plantings and clean-ups I have seen have come with tremendous volunteer support. I don't think there's going to be much change until the past impacts of land use are reversed.
