just after we went to cow lake there was an article in northwest flyfishing. shallow lake with lots of weed possibilities and fairly clear. lots of casting room. tons of damsel flies. no fish, not a rise or strike. the baitfishers had similar bad luck. i am not trying to discourage anyone from going . it was only 60 miles for me but what a letdown without a bump. mike w

I've heard it could be a cycle thing, although after the Sprauge restock I'm sure that some of those fish made it to Cow, but the bait crowd knew it fairly well so I'm not surprised it is fished out.

Russians seem to be an invasive species that is terribly detrimental to any body of water that they congregate.

I wrote the article in NW Fly Fishing that featured Cow Lake; I hope you liked it. The lake itself is certainly not an easy lake to figure out. I don't know for how long it will be conducive for trout growth before the warm-water species take over but I would think it would still fish well for a few more years after the re-hab. Sprague is still fishing well for trout even with the warm-water species beginning to make up a larger biomass so who knows.

    Thanks Ribka.

Ira, I was thinking the same thing...51 degrees is surprisingly cool, cooler than the OK lakes that I have been hitting and should be prime for a trout bite on Cow or any other lake.

Very true. And they lurk on this website like crazy. I've never had a problem posting locations till they started showing up and poaching places to death. The game wardens here gave me their cards just to report any sightings of Russians on the reservation.

thats funny...me too, at Rufus, the Tribal police are ontop of it, its worth me being checked three times a day, by the same exact Officer... they have advised me that the Russians forget they are on tribal land, lol different rules ;)

The poachers could be from any one of the former soviet block countries, so let's not assume they are all Russians.

Ukrainians too, not just Russians. I know because I go up to them and ask them.

Worked in Russia and Ukraine for 3 years and did quite a bit of fishing and hunting. poaching(theft) is very common and accepted

That's the truth. It's frustrating because before they are told differently, these people really don't know any better. We're putting signage up on the Spokane river about the CR regs in Russian. A few may read them and react properly, many will not... however, it now means NO excuse when the WDFW enforcement approach them.

It was interesting working with the russian community on it though. A total lack of understanding of the rules, regs, and health concerns. Lots of, "but in Russia..." Had to say, this isn't Russia anymore guys.[/QUOTE]

So much for all that immigration reform then, I guess. Sorry, off topic, but why are there so many Russian or former Soviets in the US? I thought we had enough poachers already.

Uhmm... Come on guys...last time I checked we had a thing called freedom which is why this country is so great. Poachers are poachers - Up in the Horsefly, BC there is a Norwegian dude that literally cleans out some of the finest lakes on the planet because he likes pickled trout. There are just people that suck and trust me they come in whatever nationality or origin you are too!
