You can't much cheaper than me. I use PVC pipe with caps on both ends. Got my 4piece rods in two of them.

Yep. Use schedule 80, and you could drag them behind your rig all the way to the river and back. Cheap, easy, and practically bomb proof.

The only problem I have with pvc rod tubes is they shatter when trying to beat a rattle snake to death in camp! metal is a much better choice for snake beating - pvc worked but could not protect my rod afterwards! just saying ----
    nice home made tube!

I would secure foam over the u-bolts/nuts, other wise even with a cloth they're going to tear the shit out of your rods!

Just drill the hole in the pvc, run the rope through and tie a knot in the part of the rope that's in the tube. The u-bolts do seem like they're not the best idea.

That's why I suggested sch 80 PVC. I had to beat a wolf to death that got into our camp.

Yeah, just go to a roofing business, ask for a few small membrane scraps, and make your own. You can get those chrome rings just about anywhere (Home Depot, Lowes, craft store).

Do away with the u-bolt and nasty threads protruding inside, just waiting to wreak havoc on a rod, and it works. Get some velcro d-loop straps and you can rig up the same external sling.

Like DK stated above, I made one from schedule 80 PVC, permanently gluing one end cap on, and it is bomb proof. It nicely holds two 4 piece rods in the homemade rod socks my wife makes for me. In addition to beating wolves to death, you can use them as a lever to jack the car if you get stuck in the mud.

have built several of these....for airline travel consider Swenson's Jet Tube cap kit....it is a swivel cap that accepts TSA locks...only negative it only fits 3" tube.
