    Roger,

Do you ever get into recommending specific patterns based on what fly is present and what stage of the fly's lifecycle?

Hi zen leecher aka bill w-
No, that's really not my area of expertise. However, I strongly recommend Hatch Guide for For Western Streams by Jim Schollmeyer, which does suggest imitative patterns, and if you should have a question about the pattern for some specific insect, Preston generously shares photos of his beautifully tied imitative creations with others on this forum.

So far, at least, as mayflies are concerned, another excellent source for recommended patterns as well as excellent photos of the bugs themselves is Western Mayfly Hatches (Hafele/Hughes, Amato Publications, 2004).
