  1. In my 20's I really enjoyed the early Broncos: 66'-77'. My favorite was 1976 Sport rust free California Bronco which I rebuilt the C4 tranny, and swapped out the front diff with a Dana 44. Dual James Duff Shocks, Duff front bumper, Warn 9000 lb winch, custom welded spare tire rack, Kayline Soft top along with the original hardtop. I chromed out the dash, installed a 6 pt. roll cage, BFG Mud Terrains, Did a Chevy Disc brake conversion, I loved that Bronco.

  2. You are correct on this and I was wrong (mostly). It looks like Ford really down played the trademark dispute thing in press materials about the car so some of the early reviews, including the one by Top Gear gave the story that they changed the name because it was no longer 40cm.

    I wasn't living in Ellensburg when they were on sale, but a friend told me that out tiny dealer also had one on the floor. My guess is that they had to trade it to another dealer also.

  4. worst vehicle i have ever owned was 1990 toyota 4wd pick up and that is the only vehicle that i had to do any major work to, well work that I had to have done and that was a transmission rebuild.
    my 1984 nissan was a much better truck as was my 1988 F-150 which was actually the most reliable vehicle I ever owned had a nissan pathfinder that was ok but the alarm system was faulty and was going off every time we locked the doors. had a 1991 Ford Escort GT that was an awesome little car, fast and great gas mileage. also had a 1977 mustang 2 302 4 speed car it was fun to drive but the fit and finish left something to be desired. Now i have a 2002 ford ranger decent truck with 230,000 miles I sleep in the back while camping , so far it's bear proof:)
  5. I just sold my 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider - I bought it in '99 for $6200 and sold it this February for $25000. I loved the car, but family responsibilities got in the way of me enjoying it (same with fly fishing!).

In the late stages of my enlistment in Army Intelligence in West Germany, I ordered a 1966 Volvo 122 station wagon, at much lower European price, but with U.S. instrumentation, and shipped to the U.S. by Volvo for just $75. I took delivery at the Newark docks, two days after being discharged in New York. That was this young man's idea of a sports vehicle (and still is). It had a horizontally split rear door, so that I could sleep in the back with my feet on the tailgate, and frequently did. That summer I drove it west, to a new life in the Rocky Mts., camping all the way. Later, with clamp-on boat rack (I sure miss rain gutters!), I carried my ten-foot pram fishing from B.C. to Oregon. Broke off a few mufflers on those terrible Idaho backcountry roads. Over the 10 1/2 years I owned it, its dark green faded to near-invisibility. When I had to retire it, its replacement was... a 144 Volvo wagon, also dark green. That first one was the only new vehicle I've ever owned.

  7. Since western WA is so Volvo crazy I'm surprised to see so few in this thread. I've currently got a crush on the recently discontinued C30.
  8. Now were talkin. First post that sparked my interest in 5 pages of mostly big American cars that go fast in a straight line, have primitive engineering and bodies with all the grace and sex appeal of tonka toys.

    I had a friend who had both a Giulietta SZ Sprint Zagato and a Giulia Sprint Speciale. As an Alfa mechanic for over 20 years he came into contact with opportunities to aquire them at reasonable cost in the 1960's and 70's. I was able to drive the Giulia Sprint but never the Zagato.

  9. Fred, I almost missed this one. I'm mostly a Vespa guy, but those Lammies sure are sweet. Even better with a pretty Italian signorina on board.
  10. Maybe you overlooked the X1/9 posts?
    I went to work in the eighties at a Lancia dealership; three Zagatos were left for sale when I got there. One red, one white, one blue.
    Pretty interesting cars, for their time: twin overhead cam, four wheel discs, mid engine,rack and pinion steering, targa top, four seater!! Looking back, I wish I had bought them all and stored them.
    We later sold Alfas: but the only one that really got ahold of me was the GTV....
    Yet ANOTHER car I wish I could have bought at the time.
    I liked the Alfetta, sort of, but never warmed up to their mechanical fuel injection system. The Alfa badge, however, is very special.
  11. First car: 58 Volkswagen bought out of a pasture with 5 year old gas, dead battery and no headliner. Cut the fender wells out and put four 845 snow tires on it. Was a fun car, off road around North Kitsap. Sold it for $125 in quarters. They didn't even count the deposit at the Poulsbo Bank.
    Second car was a new Gremlin. Laugh all you want but it was a good car. Beat the crap out of it for several years but it kept ticking.
    Still looking for an old classic truck, like the Stude or a 56 Chevy but will probably get another smallish Toyota.

  12. Big issue with those cars are parts, and they aren't worth the money you put into them to restore them. I have a 72 Datsun 240z in my garage(one of the first 500 in the US) that just sits in original condition. I dont want to get rid of it but its just not worth the money it would cost to restore. I also have had a love affair with a couple of MGB GT cars(pre 72) and a few TR4\6's and you just cant get out what you put into them.

    Even doing all the work myself(including paint) if you are using quality materials you will spend 8-12k never mind the time you put into them.

    sort of like fly fishing and fly tying....
  13. I bought my 1st car at the age of 19.
    1959 all original Corvette purchased from the original owner. It had factory Rochester fuel injection, a removable hardtop and a very rare automatic soft top. Babied it for 10 years and 10,000 miles and sold it for 6 times what I paid for it with 69,000 miles on it in 1984 to start a business. Fun car, lots of fun times in it!

  15. No I didn't miss the X1/9 post. Its one of the notable exceptions to what I described as "mostly american cars". I'm sure it was a fun car to drive. What with its small size, light weight and mid engine balance it had to be fun. For me, with a few exceptions the wedge concept as thoroughly explored by Bertone, Pininfarina and others was never my favorite era in design, automotive and otherwise. Again, just my opinion, but a cars gotta have some curves. The underlying shape may be a wedge with curves on top but the purified, hard edged wedge left me cold.

  16. How about the Fiat Dino? Sexiest curved back glass of any car I think I've ever seen.
    I was never a huge fan of the wedge either (TR7) but.....the X1/9 was ahead of it's time, IMO. At least in this country.

  18. Automotive styling seems to go from basic box, morphing through several stages & back again. Somewhere along the line, the hard edge wedge came into play. Eventually, the edges softened, flat surfaces began to bulge & flare until, in the interest of drag coefficient, they all started looking like pregnant jelly beans. And Detroit, always on the back side of the curve, never did quite get it right. The exceptions being the Studebaker Lowery coupes & the Corvette split window stingray.

    I liked the 1st gen Scirocco Champaign Edition, with it's ground effects, and other little accents. Plus mine had an aftermarket turbo & a beetle style sunroof. The 2nd gen, with that rear spoiler blocking your view out the back, damn near made me vomit every time I saw one. Likewise that Mercury Mercur XRIIt or whatever it was called. With the weird B & C pillars and two f**in ugly spoilers across the back. Like what the hell were they thinking? Then there were the sleepers that just seemed to grab you by the cajones' like the Jensen Interceptor with that big Chrysler engine, the Dino Ferrari, Volvo P1800 wagon, even a Saab Sonnet, or an Opel GT.

    I know it was a bad year, but I had a '76 Nova that I had big plans for up until I tried to curb hop a 18" monster of a curb in the rain one night...
    That thing was fun! I had the inline 6 built up a bit and it ran great!! I could change the oil in it with out getting under the car.
