Well last trip out east I hooked a fish speed trolling and slowed down in reverse and forgot the motor was on and cut my 300 grain 26 ft. head line in half (ouch) now I am looking to replace it with another heavy sinker.

I love the 300 grain head for trolling. my friend Derek came on a trip and had bought a 450 grain 24 ft. head line for trolling and actually did better with hook-ups because he was deeper when speed trolling!

what I'm wondering is do any of you use loop to loop heads for trolling trout? like a 20 or 30 ft. 300 to 500 grain head with running line on the reel? what I'm thinking is the running line would be thinner anyway and let these heavy tips sink even better. I know this is kinda like the spey set-up but would only be used for trolling not casting hardly at all but to help get the line out with a 6 wt. I have 7 and 8 wts. but do not use them for trout. I could have one spool lined with backing and running line and possibly tips in the 300 and 400 grain weights to loop on fast. seems I could do this pretty cheap just don't really know how to go about it.

    Thanks for any advice!!!

I use a lot of the multi-tip lines that connect with a loop to loop. I think they work fine, don't do that much trolling but I don't see why it wouldn't work for you.

I use a 60' Tenny deep sink line straight to my backing and occasionally troll with all the line plus backing out.

Just call up a spey shop and order X feet of T-11 or T-14 that will give you the weight you want. They will probably even weld a loop on each end for you.

I thought about a sinking head with just backing but would like at least 90 to 100 ft. of fly line for stripping in with fish on, kinda hard to keep up doing that with backing I put out at least 90 ft. or more when doing this. Also I use a lot of tuff lines for backing (#65) the line I was using was an old teeny 300 tip sink that I used for steelhead in the 80's, I have it spiced with a short piece of mono right now. took it to my local shop for repair and was told they couldn't do it??? don't know what that was all about?

Anyway I've been glancing at running lines or "level lines" and seeing some different short heavy tips but really don't want to have go the full spey set-up at who knows how much since I wont need it to throw 100 ft. of line.
