It has been too long since I posted a fishing report and figured I'd start back up with my 3-year old son's first fish on a fly rod! Hit the local fly fishing only lake that has a good population of 10-12" bows/cutts that seem very willing to chase a small baitfish pattern. To minimize unintentional piercings we primarily trolled and Liam did all the reeling after I'd set the hook; which I was a little rusty at and was not forgiven when a few slipped off the hook! I managed to keep him interested for 2.5-hours, an hour and a half longer than anticipated, granted 30 minutes of which was a cheesy pretzel bite OD nap.

It was a great first trip out, we managed to land 2 of the 6 fish hooked and not tip the canoe!

Outstanding! He looks a little tentative in the last picture, but nonetheless, you've probably got a fishing buddy for life.

    good on ya, dad.

And great to see your son in a life jacket.

I used to hate those things when I was his age, but I require it on my son even now that he is 12.

That definitely brought a smile to my face. No excuses for me not taking my five year old daughter. Good report!!

He wanted it off for sure, I compromised with undoing the top buckle since the shoulder straps were squeezing his head when he sat down! An awesome outcome of our trip is that he has been trying to convince his 8-year old sister that it is fun and the "canoe isn't dirty, it just has spiders crawling everywhere." Told him he'd sell it better if he dropped the spider comment.

Way to go, Liam, and good on you, dad! My daughter is almost 1, I can't wait to see if she'll also pick up the fly-fishing bug...

    Thanks for sharing,
    Kenneth

Spiders - natural wildlife spotting up close. Way better than video games.

Great report and pics of a memorable day. I must say it was very canny of him to mention the spiders to insure exclusive fishing rights with dad in the canoe.
