Dimebrite and I hit a MA 9 beach this morning from 7 till 11:30. We each went 1 for 2. Nothing big, with both fish being in the 24-25" range, so around 4 lbs. Chartreuse over white or light gray was the ticket today. Tim's fish put up a pretty good little battle. Mine, not so much. It tracked the fly to within a couple of feet of the beach before it committed. Great visual, but once hooked up it did the prerequisite 3 or 4 360 degree death spins then one big jump which resulted in the fish landing on the beach. 10 secs, done and headed to the bbq. Really nice day one the water with hardly anybody around. Thanks for the company Tim. SF
That was a great morning of fishing Brian, too much fun. Next time maybe we'll stick all our fish and limit out. It is really encouraging to be getting coho from the beach again, it should be a pretty good year. Seeing you land your silver in record time reminded me of a killer whale beaching itself to get a seal pup! Let's do it again soon.
Nice work. Ha, that's funny having the fish jump right onto the beach. Landing 'em doesn't get much easier. I once had a small hatchery chinook buck that I hooked run right up onto the gravel bar I was fishing from, trying to imitate the "chum road-crossing trick." It ended up right at my feet, like it was sacrificing itself to me. I was so humbled by that move, that I let it go. (Actually, there were a lot of fish around, I already had a nice hatchery Chinook hen and a good Coho, and I was after something bigger than a suicidal dwarf, to top off my limit of 3). That really pissed off the guy fishing next to me, who hadn't caught anything.
Sounds like a great time and some nice looking fish! I really wanted to be on that type of beach, but instead got roped in to a weekend on the coast with some friends. Still fun but I prefer to have a fly rod while hanging out on the beach! So that was incoming tide correct? Would you say these are likely still resident coho?
Matt, Yes on both the incoming tide and resident fish. There are some good water movement tides coming up weekend for the weekend warriors like myself.
I was noticing the tides as well. My brother will be visiting and isn't really a fisherman, but I'm planning to convince him to come out one day and toss a buzz bomb so I can get my beach time in. I might try and make it out there one evening this week too. Not the best tide movement after work but I've found the best time to fish is whenever I can make it out
Stonefish and guys, Thanks for the inspirational pictures they got my rod arm twitching! I am out from the UK baby sitting 3 grandchildren whilst their parents take the 4th (who has just turned 4 and is being feed via tubes) to see a specialist doc in Pittsburgh. I might be able to hit a beach or two if my wife agrees to holding the fort on her own, but I know you guys don't like to go public on hot fishing spots but the only beach fishing spots I know (from previous vacations here) are Picnic Point, Mukilteo, Under the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and a couple of spots on the west side of Whidbey Island. Is there any chance of me connecting with a Coho in those locations? If there is please suggest the best option as I still have not had a pull from a Coho! Many thanks
Those spots can all be productive at various times. Stop in at a local shop, ask what flies to use and pick up a couple, and you'll get the latest intel and maybe a suggestion where to fish that's not already on your list . . . Stonefish didn't share that he's put in a bunch of time already this summer searching for fish, without a lot of luck. Note that he and Dimebright had two on each. You just have to hit the beaches and hope for the best.
I hit that same location yesterday and only found a few shakers. Didn't see anyone get anything to speak of, not even the bombers! it seems to me that these resies are just moving around and that it is not any actual run that has begun.
One six pounder to the beach yesterday on a buzzbomb. Couple fish jumping a hundred yards out. Few shakers for me. "Word on the beach" is that a gear fisherman landed a 40lb king there last weekend. Boy would that be a surprise!
Here are the latest catch stats for the central sound and straits. Not great numbers for the central sound, but I've heard reports of some ocean fish are turning the corner. http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/creel/puget/2012/aug06-12_2012/central.htm http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/creel/puget/2012/aug06-12_2012/peninsula.htm
Good to hear! On Weds at a certain park just east of the hood canal bridge, 5 gear guys had just landed 4-6 lb silvers right as I showed up. No love for me though Looking forward to my first silver on the fly!
kyle, that's the only open section in that area right? I've never fished there but should add it to my list I suppose.
Just a heads up to the fellow fly fisher, the gear guys at that particular park can be real asses to anyone holding a fly rod!
Dimebrite really knows how to hurt a guy. He sends me a pic at 7:30 AM of a silver he caught this morning while I'm driving to work..... damn him! Nice work Tim and good luck to everybody this weekend. Just an FYI as well. Keep and eye on the emergency regs. There is talk of MA 9 and 10 possibly closing early or having a limit reduction on kings. They'd still both be open for silvers though. There may be a decision on this as soon as this afternoon after the WDFW / Puget Sound Recreational Fishery Advisors conference call.
